Re: 100 year old piano
I have worked on pianos some, and currently, I am in the middle of a repair. Are you doing to do the work Ryan? Prices on new pianos have dropped from what there were in the past. Getting a piano tech to work on a piano is generally pretty expensive. The one good thing you mention is that this is an...

Re: cracked finish
My guess is that the guitar got cold, and the finish cracked as it shrank more than the wood underneath.
It would be important to know what finish was used.

Another thought, would there be a plasticizer leaching out of the rubber holder that is causing the ring?
Especially if the finish has dried for a month.

Re: Improving a cheap ukulele?
With the skills you have, build another couple of instruments. Use what ever woods you have available, and modify or adjust any details to personalize them for you, the builder, or for you kids. Working on a lower quality instrument will be harder work than making a new instrument. After doing lots ...

I am sure steam will raise the dent.
I have no idea what will happen to your finish, or if it can be repaired after steaming.
You might practice on scrap first.

Re: Ocarina- hole design and placement
Thanks Yuri!!
I have looked at your site.
I could find some old deer bones, but I don't think I could do such nice carving!
I see sites talking about 4 or more holes.
Which do you recommend?

Ocarina- hole design and placement
I want to make some wooden ocarinas. I was planning on a simple windway, and fipple design, with a square box (rather than curved or carved) for the body. I see designs for 4 hole, 6 hole, 8 hole and more than 8 hole designs. These are for my grand children to amuse them selves with, rather than for...

Re: "Unstaining" a strat
Painting is a real option. Sanding will lighten the color. You can try a bleaching agent. This might help. End grain will absorb more of the stain, and it will be hard to get out of the end grain in an even manner. This might be a "burst" type of finish option. Of course, practice on scrap...

Re: Buffalo horn for saddles and nuts
Is this a material that could cause problems if it ran into some of the restrictions on transport across international (or even state) borders?
I am not against using horn, but I suspect we have adequate or better materials available.
