Yamaha FG411 S-12 acoustic need neck reset

Post by Didier Savard »

I had this guitare for free.

The back of the bridge has a small buldge, i don't want to shave the bridge of a 12 strings.

So getting slowly to a neck reset, first one for me. I have all the instruction, the DVD and the tools.

The only thing that's making me hesitated is that i just saw that on a 1994 Yamaha, Epoxy may have been used.

I need confirmation on this please.

Thank you.

Didier,
Are you certain that you need a neck reset?
Do you mean there is a small bulge of the top below the bridge?
Is the action very high?
Can you post a picture, as that will help the folks here a lot in giving correct advice.

( I do not know if the neck was epoxied or not)

I don't mean to scare you, but resetting the neck on an old Yamaha could turn out to be a real challenge. I have reset a lot of necks, mostly Martin dovetails which have been mostly straight forward with a few being more difficult, and about a year ago a Yamaha 6 string. First, the glue in the short dovetail didn't let go before the stacked heel came apart. I don't know how easy or difficult YOURS will be but if it doesn't steam apart quickly I would cool it down and let it dry, and slip the back at the neck block.

Or, you can cut the heel at the body and convert it to bolt on neck.

One large problem is the body is laminated and can come apart too during the steaming process.

Thanks
I will try to get picture.
The action is ok to high, will messure it after work.
The thing is free , so if it does not survived, there are no consequence. On top of that, i am not really a 12 string kind of player.
Converting it to a bolt on neck is an option too.
