Re: Uh-oh. Quick fix?

Well it worked. I got into the school shop on my lunch break. With only a drill press and a dull hand saw available I made a workable though huge and clunky piece. Some people in the audience got a kick out of it.
Thanks.

Uh-oh. Quick fix?

My 30 year old Epiphone Dove is feeling her age, I guess. Today, the 11th fret simply fell out. Moments later the plastic button on the G tuning machine crumbled. Not sure what's going on - humidity hasn't changed markedly. The tuner button was probably ready to go. Tomorrow I am scheduled to accomp...

You call it a defect, I call it character.
The coin is cool. Do I remember you posting another coin inlay?

Re: My Side Port Binding Process (LONG)

First off, that looks great.
Second, I echo Barry, that’s a great process.
Third, that is a well-produced tutorial. Clear and thorough.
Thank you!

Re: Side Port Binding Progress

By itself, this doesn't appeal as much to me - especially seeing as you did such a great job on the initial scarf. But if these accents are echoed elsewhere in the overall design of the guitar, I could see it being really effective.

Re: What?

Cool. But I'm full of questions: Did the same person gift you both elements? With the idea you'd make an instrument out of it? Or just because they know you build? Or were they seperate gifts that you put together on impulse? Any which way, this is an intriguing piece. I like it.

Re: Building instruments, while having young kids

Not tips as such: so many of the little time savers and patience savers happened on the fly. But I will say I needed to learn to be a more patient guy. I also realized how much shopwork (and gigging) did for my mental health. Making time to recharge that way saved me and my family a lot of heartache.

Re: about the dovetail neck joint

I took my first forays into guitar building with a gentleman who did just that. On the bandsaw, he cut the tail right out of the neck block before installation. After he refined the neck angle, he bolted the tail to the neck.

It wasn’t elegant, but its held up for these thirty years.
