Re: Flat vs Domed top

As I understand it, the radius on the top helps strengthen it, and the dome allows for extra movement in RH changes, helping prevent cracks....

Re: Quick Bending Questions.

I'[ve only ever bent by hand, and find it gives me a real "feel" for the wood. It bends when it wants to bend and not before. Last set I did was Bubinga, wich is supposed to be a tough bend, but with a spritz and a bit of time, it bent very nicely. So, I guess, I second the idea to bend it first by ...

Refinishing

Been searching for a thread about this topic, but haven't turned up anything that helps me so far. A mate brought his LP copy by in a burst, which he hates, and wants me to refinish it in black. No worries. I'll try to talk him out of it, as it's an Orville and a good guitar, but I suspect he'll wan...

Re: Fancy figured woods...

Looks to be raining Zebrawood. Here's a billet I got really cheap. 1m x 235mm x 26mm(39x9.5x1+ inches) 2 Acoustic sets plus a Uke or a couple electric drop tops..... Probably acoustic as it's well quartered. Not as fancy a graining as the previous one, but it'll do.... zebrawood 1 (Medium).jpeg zebr...

Re: Nylon string top...

Thanks for that advice, too, Alan. I'm doing a bit of googling to see how to determine the long grain stiffness in the future. So far I've found lots of real science papers, but nothing that looks like it'll help me yet. Might mostly stick the mass as an indicator, until I get good at the build, or ...

Re: Nylon string top...

Thanks guys. Alan, that's exactly the kind of advice I was looking for. I'm new to the building game, and trying to figure out, rather than thru trial and error at great expense, what to use for what. My one cedar top is 323kg/m3, and I have a Lutz at 391kg/m3, so I'll offer Col a colour choicefor t...

Re: the need to pore fill...

Yeah, I agree with all the foregoing. A mirror finish doesn't mean it's not a great guitar, nor the reverse....The reality is that the market has been pre-determined. MOST buyers are looking for that finish. Just what it is, and those I know who have "settled" on a satin or matte finish have done so...

Re: the need to pore fill...

Questions. How many guitars HAVE you built? How many have you sold? How many were ordered? How many of your orders did you ask about the finishing? How many said I don't mind an un pore-filled finish? How many even know what that is? How big a difference do you think there is between the other guy's...

Re: Methods of thicknessing soundboard and online tutorials

Yeesh, for a cheap alternative, I used my hand-held belt sander and a random orbital sander until I built my drum sander. Worked fine, but needed a lot of care to avoid gouging a hole thru the timbers....ask me how I know...

Re: 30's Epiphone archtop binding replacement

Mate, if I was you, I'd give your friend the information you've gathered, and suggest that he decide on his own, and/or find other options on his own.... Why? this seems like a good way to wreck a friendship. If he takes your recommendations and doesn't like the result, you'll cop the blame. I've se...

Re: victoria cypress

Consensus opinion down here is that it's good for back and sides on classicals, and that it. Not soundboard material at all. I have a set of it sold a top wood, and I'm gonna try it.....one day....

It is, in fact, Monterey Cypress.....so far as I know...
