Acoustic Foam

Post by Chuck Tweedy »

I need to get some acoustic foam paneling to make a small "anechoic" test box.
This is actually for work, but I hope to use this project as a springboard to build my own stuff ... eventually.

Anyhow, a quick search on the web yields a lot of foam - much of it looks like a joke.
Are there key search terms I need to use to find good stuff (absorbenc factor, reflective, K_something, ... ??)

And/Or does anyone have a source for great stuff?

Thanks!!

Chuck,
Maybe the audio pros on the groupdiy forum, http://www.groupdiy.com, can help you. I'd try asking there.

Thanks Bill. Good to hear from you again.
I've done a bit of research (since I didn't get anyone here to do it for me) and I've found quite a few good sources of foam.
First, there is McMaster-Carr (of course)
soundproofcow.com is a reasonable source
So is acousticalsurfaces.com
And auralex.com is a good source for the premium stuff

Many of the products are rated as having absorbency coefficients > 1 at certain frequencies (don't quite know how that is possible yet), but the material is rated in a rational way.

Do you have a link to the stuff available at McMaster-Carr? I've wanted to try some fun experiments too.

Sure - THIS should work

EDIT: Hey Wow, I finally figured out how to embed a link. Amazing what is possible when I actually take a minute to figure something out :P
