Re: Replace old ply back with solid wood?

If I pieced in a bit in front and behind would that do anything? I know it would be joints, but I like that better than scraping out the plate.

Re: Replace old ply back with solid wood?

I think it is a bit narrow, guitar has a big moustache bridge. But I got jumpy and glued it in before I saw this. It’s in, I hope it won’t be an issue, what could happen with a narrow plate? The top on this guitar is actually pretty thick. I’ll measure it later and see if you guys think it will fail...

Re: Replace old ply back with solid wood?

Latest. Glue down the bridge plate and then the back? Or is there more to do here?
Here’s a picture of the plate for thickness reference. It is 1/8” pauduk

Shaped a bit. 1/4” wide, except for the joint. There it is a bit wider and left flat on top

Re: Replace old ply back with solid wood?

Ok, how’s this?
My x-braces are 7/16 wide and 7/16 tall, I shaped. The tone bars and fingers are 1/4x1/4, shaped.

Re: Replace old ply back with solid wood?

That’s why I’m here, I’m here to learn! I’m gluing the side lams back together now, then I’ll finish removing the braces. I don’t think they will be re-usable, so it may be a while before i can get some delivered. Meantime, I’ll clean up the old glue and fix anything that needs it. When brace materi...

Re: Replace old ply back with solid wood?

Here’s how it’s going so far. This is a picture of the bracing that I had put in and some more so you can see how big they are. The side laminate has delaminated a bit in an area. I have to glue that back together before I do anything else I think.

Re: Replace old ply back with solid wood?

SINCE I’m this deep into it, maybe I should replace the plywood sides with solid maple sides I have. Any thoughts on this? I’ll be looking for advice on size/shape of bracing for the top soon🧐

Re: Replace old ply back with solid wood?

The bridge plate is about 2 1/2”x7”. And it’s in pieces, as the main x braces run through the area. Can’t really see much in the picture because of my excellent gluing technique 🤪

Re: Replace old ply back with solid wood?

I used quarter sawn spruce. I could pull the back again and put on the solid one I was going to use. Ok, so it’s over braced, I wasn’t sure if it was that or the Pauduk bridge plate.
