Re: Bending ebony

After breaking ebony bindings on the pipe for 10 years, I bought an electric bender. With a piece of flashing backing, I’ve had much better luck.

Re: classical neck angle

Alan, those who don't use a solera, do they build it like a steel string at the neck attachment?

Re: classical neck angle

I can't quite let this go. What if you put the neck in the fixture and mark the neck slot from the fixture?

Re: classical neck angle

It seems to me if you put the sides and neck in the fixture and make a line for the side slot it would be best and easiest. Does the ramp affect anything else?

I just realized that you probably can't get everything in the fixture til you have the slot.

Re: classical neck angle

That makes sense to me. Makes me wonder why the neck on the solera needs a ramp. I've made 15 or so steel-string and it's hard for me to visualize this different method.

Re: classical neck angle

I'm using the Spanish foot. Should the slot be angled enough to lift the neck just a bit?

Do you build in a neck angle on a classic with the angle of the rib slot?

Re: Drill-mounted buffer

A proper buffer for guitars runs at about 750 revs, much slower than many buffers. Automotive set-up might be different.

Drill-mounted buffer

I've made a dozen or so guitars, and I've decided to address inconsistent buffing results. Can you expect consistently good results with a drill-mounted buffer? I use 2, 1 for polish, 1 for buffing.

Re: pickup in new guitar

Having done it once now, I think the way to do it is to cut the hole and mount everything and then take it back out to finish. That way the finish doesn't build up and you are less likely to scrape the finish when you make the holes, etc. This is of course, wisdom from one time, not very scientific ...

Dripping glue

How do you avoid dripping glue onto sides, especially when working on binding and purfling? It shows under finish and is almost impossible to sand off without leaving a flat spot.

Re: x brace angle on 2 parlor guitars built simulaneously

I just made one from that plan, I made the x as open as I could and still catch the ends of the bridge. Advise from Doolin years ago. I don't know the angle. Mine is lutz, but a bit thicker than yours, it has a nice, throaty treble. Tape pulled stringiness out of the lutz top.

Re: dovetail neck 1 1/2 degree

Thanks, if I get this right, I should make the neck block exact, and make the adjustments on the neck itself.
