Re: Forster oddball archtop

If I'm understanding you right I'm not sure what the advantage would be. The strings press on the bridge which then press on the top? It's sort of what this design already does, I think?

Re: Forster oddball archtop

My wife told me she really liked the soundhole! Go figure. This was a first effort for me and there are a number of things I'd change Here's a clip of the guitar played through a ZT Amps Lunchbox http://chnm.gmu.edu/courses/magic/archpamp.mp3 Flaws in my playing aside, I feel like this guitar has a ...

Re: Forster oddball archtop

I might have had the level slightly up on the Forster, but they were within a few db

Here's a short clip of the Forster style with a pickup, recorded direct into the computer, no amp, a little reverb

Re: Forster oddball archtop

Well it's more or less finished except for the pickup I'm waiting to get in the mail. For skeptics, below is an acoustic sound comparison--my blundering forster style effort and my 1978 Guild Artist Award. Both recorded with a Shure Sm44 about three feet away, with identical amounts of reverb. Both ...

Re: Forster oddball archtop

I'm surprised there's not more interest in this. I'm not. Archtops have a limited market and in my limited experience there is little appetite for anything unusual or innovative. This comes from a guy who makes archtops with a carbon fiber soundboard, so it's not because I'm a traditionalist. Ken P...

Re: Forster oddball archtop

I'm surprised there's not more interest in this. Even with my complete lack of skill and experience I think I ended up with a viable sounding archtop. I haven't been able to try it out amplified yet--I'm waiting on the pickup--but this is definitely a interesting and practical way to build a guitar,...

Re: Forster oddball archtop

So if anyone is interested I have the guitar semi finished. The body is roughly carved--no recurve carved yet--and the neck is attached but not carved and the bridge saddles aren't cut, nut finished etc. Since the pick below I've added a binding and shortened the neck. But here is a clip of the raw ...

Re: A few bending questions

Also the cherry wood I'm using looks to be quite old and it's not very dense. It likely was stored Ina barn somewhere for years. I'm wondering if that could have an effect on the bending properties

A few bending questions

So I'm working on my first acoustic guitar, a cut rate version of Nick Forster's "long neck" archtop. I've git a neck made and am working on the body, which will be 2 3/4 deep with a spruce top and cherry back and sides. I've never bent wood before. I made a bending iron out of a piece of ...

Re: Forster oddball archtop

I've started building a gut-level version of this. Keep in mind I've never built an acoustic guitar. I have a mold built, and am working on bending sides. So far I have one lightly figured maple side bent. The second, with the cutoff, Is proving to be really difficult. Top will be a piece of spruce ...

Re: Dumb Guitar mold question

Thank you I'm not planning to make a full size flattop. more of a thinline archtop, probably 2-3 inch side.

Good idea about clamping the linings--need to keep that in mind. I can see where bigger would be better

Dumb Guitar mold question

So I'm building my first bent-side acoustic, after many solid bodies, and I'm making the mold. I have a good form and a couple matching layers ready Dumb question: Should the mold be bigger or smaller than the sides? For example, if the sides are three inches, should the mold be less than three, or ...

Just to be clear: no, they are not $35, 000, they are $8500. There is one use dealer for the Forster archtops: they sell them for $8500

Re: Forster oddball archtop

After reading the PDF it would appear that he consciously traded some acoustic volume for extra sustain knowing full well that the instrument was going to be amplified. I'd suggest that eliminating feedback potential was a secondary motivation. I'm a little surprised that the price of this instrume...

Re: Forster oddball archtop

I suspect it sounds very good acoustically So now your suspicions have flipped 180 degrees? This is what I felt you originally thought and that is why I made my original post. I don't wish to go any further down this road. Lets talk about the guitar. Even though the pressure on the bridge might be ...

Re: Forster oddball archtop

Looks like the neck could be attached any way you want, as it's just a neck with a body beneath it. I also wonder how the body is receiving sufficient vibration to create much acoustic sound: sort of like touching a headstock to hollow core door and playing. If it's basically a neck-through with a ...

Re: Forster oddball archtop

I don't understand how vibrations are transferred to the bridge. neck vibrates, vibrates the bridge. I assume it would work, as mentioned like if you play a solid body an touch the headstock to a hollow door. I'm guessing that the ability to reduce the pressure on the top lets it vibrate more respo...

yes this is why I wrote: "They are mostly amplified clips, and it does seem to have the attack envelope of an archtop. But I'm suspicious of soundclips as evidence."

Re: Forster oddball archtop

Looks interesting. How does it sound acoustically? I've never heard one in person, but sound clips on his site sound fantastic. They are mostly amplified clips, and it does seem to have the attack envelope of an archtop. But I'm suspicious of soundclips as evidence. Mr. Forster seems like a very th...
