Re: Grain on bearclaw sitka top

I guess my concern is the strength of the top being able to resist tearing apart when it comes under full string tension. The angle is extremely acute (probably less than 1 degree). This is one of those mistakes that is a shame since the top was a nice piece of wood. That being said, hopefully I can...

Grain on bearclaw sitka top

I joined a heavy figured bearclaw sitka spruce top and went ahead and did the rosette and cut the sound hole and then (of course not before I started), I noticed that grain lines converged on the center line with the apex of the "chevron" pointing toward the neck. I know the common/best pr...

Re: Bending inquiry

I don't know if you have done this already or not, but it helps to stuff the end of the pipe with steel wool so you don't burn holes in your shirts and it helps keep the temperature up in the pipe. Re: Mistakes made while building early guitars

I have a doozy. After spraying and level sanding my first guitar. I had just done my final pass with the finish and my hanger came apart. The guitar fell about 4 feet onto a sawdust covered concrete floor. It crushed one corner on the lower bout and the nice, now softened burning-in lacquer was impr...

Re: New Cordless Drill

I have a newer Milwaukee 18 volt (2 years old). It is EXTREMELY durable. I managed to drop it about 30 feet from the peak of my barn when I was screwing down metal roofing, onto a compacted bullrock and gravel drive. I thought that was it. I expected the worst, but it only suffered some rash from th...

String height on 34" scale acoustic bass

I am just wrapping up my first guitar for a client (a 34" scale acoustic bass). The problem I am having is setting the saddle for the correct string height. I have built 6 strings and understand the 12th fret to bottom of string measurements for setting string height, but am not sure about meas...
