Been making Indian Bansuri but with western fine tuning

Post by Noah Hornberger »

The bansuri is a beautiful and primitive bamboo flute. After ordering several from India and converting their tuning from the indian style (loose and closer to natural harmonics with a perfect 5th) to western equal temperament, I started to make my own bansuri. Eventually I will post some images and pictures, maybe a video. These are experimental instruments in my opinion (unfortunately I've heard flute snobs use the term 'frankenflutes' to describe such creations) but to me they are a unique and lush sounding. Each flute that I make has a slightly different voice due to the differences in bamboo stock, and so this is why they are not standardized. But in terms of getting a sound that seems like it came from long ago . . . well they do that well.
Are there any other active members who make wood flutes?

I've dabbled in flutes and other woodwinds, but mostly PVC while dabbling. It is just far easier and cheaper to experiment with. I do have a wood lathe, but am not yet set up for boring, etc.

Pay no attention to the conservative perfectionists behind the curtain! No instrument advances without experimentation (and, unfortunately, usually more failure than successes!).

Here is a link to one of my recent bamboo flutes in D major (a short 40 second demo):
