Thread is dead for 4 1/2 months and we suddenly post 4 minutes apart? Spooky

I guess I haven't actually participated in this thread either (other than a lame joke on the first page (actually I thought it was pretty funny but everyone's a critic))
I make staircases. I make trim. I make houses feel like homes. I make people happy.
And I make a really good Totino's Pizza

Mostly I make my students stay up late and bemoan that I'm a tough teacher. They get jobs so they don't complain too much. I also have a lathe and make little things.

I know, it's just a pen, but it's not one of those kits. It's my own design.

I make music with a Chapman Stick. It's not really a guitar and there aren't many people making custom tapping instruments yet. I'm not sure I want to make one as I'm more interested in making acoustic guitars now.

Oh, yeah. I also make software for Macs and iOS. A lot of us programmer types do the same thing as a hobby as we do for our day jobs. I'm changing that now and switching to making bigger things with wood as my main hobby. A year from now I'd like to say I have made a guitar. Fingers crossed!

Randy, that is, hands down, the nicest one of those I have ever seen. What is it?

Thanks Brian,
It's a refinement of a cross between a lyre and the theorbo I've been not working on for 6 years. They're called a lyrobo.
Like the fanned frets? They are my solution to the problem of just intonation played in different keys on one instrument.
I'll be putting glass in the top for the ergonomics of resting my face on it after my third beer.

OK, you asked for it. This is probably my best recording, flaws and all.

I'm a hobbiest musician and woodworker, I do them both for fun and try to not take myself too seriously. 8-)

That is just great! Good for you on your recovery too, music is a great healer...you should be proud and I love the stick. And if you feel like inspiring us, you can tell your story if you want to.

Thank you, it feels great to play it, too. Bach sure knew how to do that.

I would be very happy to share this story. I wasn't sure if shop injuries are a welcome topic on a forum like this. A big part of my current push to get my shop back up to par is that I'm sufficiently past the trauma and want to be in my shop again. My shop was in too much disarray and that contributed to my injury. Here's more.

Thanks,

-Eric

P.S.: I was born in GR and visit fairly often.

Details of shop injuries are welcome because they may help someone else avoid this specific type of injury in the future. They are also a general reminder to all of us to be very careful in the shop.

Hi Eric,
Accidents to the index finger are very common. I have on two occasions experienced them myself. The first was clipping the tip while running short pieces over the jointer (bad idea). The second time was when I was using what I thought was a relatively safe tool - a belt sander. When changing from horizontal to vertical sanding my index finger slipped into the area between the belt and the housing. The trigger was locked on, and in the few seconds before a fast thinking coworker could unplug the sander it had sanded away half the thickness of the distal phalanges meat and part of the bone. In the E.R. I was feeling sorry for my loss until I saw a person who (at some time in the past) had lost both his legs. Losing part of a finger is comparatively minor. Thankfully most of my finger grew back and it is only about a 1/4 inch shorter. Some loss of sensation still remains even after several years. Good luck with your recovery, and remember - there are no safe tools!
