If it's not a guitar or a bass guitar discussion, and it's got strings, put it here.

5 atring electric octave mandolin

Post by Dave Gentner »

I've been asked to build a 5 string electric octave mandolin. It will have an 18.5" scale length. What's the typical nut width and the overall string spacing at the bridge for this instrument?

I don't have the first idea of what any of these measurements should be. Since someone has asked you to make this, hopefully s/he has played something similar and has some experience and preference. String spacing and nut width has a big impact on the feel of an instrument so starting with what the end user has used in the past is a good starting point.

An internet search suggests 1 5/16" nut width...? Assuming you're talking about something like a GME-5.
Disclaimer: I don't own, nor have I ever played a 5 sting octave mandolin. Just found the topic interesting and decided to look around.
