Finally - Build Number 2 - Violette DC 254

Post by John Violette »

This is my take on a 24 fret double cut style guitar. I developed my own blueprint from scratch (borrowed heavily from the neck on my build number 1 in 2011), which I guess is lost somewhere in the old MIMF forum archive! The body is smaller (1/2") than is typical and the carve is what i wanted done by sight and by hand after stepping with a router. No pattern, no templates were used but obviously heavily influenced by a popular style. The head-stock is an evolution from my the first guitar I designed.

Vital Statistics
24 fret, 24.9" scale length, 7.5 lbs

Quilted Maple book-matched top dyed in 'Violet' Glow Burst
Quilted maple natural binding (masked off the actual top outside edge during dying)
Alder body stained walnut (50 year old furniture stain I found from the family workshop)
Curly Canadian maple neck
Rosewood fret-board with Paua Abalone dots and side dots
Toasted curly maple head-stock plate with black/red pin-stripe veneers
Thin heel with black veneer
Curly Maple Truss Rod Cover (yet to be sprayed).
Curly Maple Cavity cover dyed to match the top.
Tremolo Cavity cover - undecided whether to leave it open due to requiring access for Tremol-NO device.

Floating 2-point Chrome Wilkinson VS-100 Tremolo with Tremol-NO installed in tremolo cavity
Sperzel Locking Tuners (Satin Chrome) and Tusq XL Nut
Hybrid Slinky's

Pickups
SD Jazz SH-2N neck pickup
SD Custom 5 SH-14 trembucker bridge pickup
5 way blade switch
Black Speed Knobs for master volume and tone
  • 1. Bridge Humbucker
    2. Bridge Humbucker with neck single parallel
    3. Bridge and Neck Humbuckers
    4. Bridge and Neck single coil parallel
    5. Neck Humbucker
Finish
Dye, Stain, Nitro-cellulose lacquer (19 coats)
Medium Rubbing compound rubbed by hand
Swirl remover rubbed by hand
As you can see, one horn still has a few 'sparkles' that need to be sanded that i missed. Will go back at those with 3000 grit pad and re-buff that horn.

That looks crazy nice. Are those Sperzel tuners? What did you use to put the serial number on the back of the headstock?

Really nice guitar. Just beautiful.

Very nice! Love the color on the quilted maple.
I need your help. I can't possibly make all the mistakes myself!

Yes, those are sperzels! For the logo on front and serial number on back, they are just waterslide decal paper printed on laser printer. For the "V" logo, it's printed in reverse and coloured in with a metallic sharpie.

Neck is a set neck. I glued a heel and a veneer between heel and neck blank. So it is just the tapered heel with a matched pocket cut out of the body and set neck style glued in with titebond.
