build challenge?

Post by Bryan Bear »

I haven't seen one of these in a while but always loved watching them. Does anyone want to discuss possible themes or rules? It doesn't even have to be an instrument, it could be a tool making challenge. . . Watching the build threads unfold is a good way to spark some discussions and creativity around here.

I would love to see a travel guitar challenge. I'm going on a trip and have been wondering what I would do if I was to whip up a guitar for the road.

How about, “It used to be a ______, but now it’s a _____”
Every entrant fills in the blanks for themselves.
Could run the gamut from a six to eight string conversion to “It used to be two bicycles and a kitchen sink, but now it’s a saxophone”

I've built a fair number of travel guitars. Really they are just standard guitars where the neck is made to come off and slip inside the body. I have made a number of "refinements" over the years but no major changes from the one in the archives.
Lately I've been making cigar box instruments. Someone gave me some nice wooden ones they got from a tobacco shop that usually just burns them. I'm building ukuleles and strumsticks, and I am planning a kalimba or two with some of the smaller boxes. A cigar box instrument challenge might be a fun project for people who like challenges.
