Pen blanks for rosette or other inlay?

Post by Bill Bell »

I was at a small local woodshop today and they sell plastic pen blanks of all imagineable colors and patterns. I was wondering if anyone had ever experimented with creating a tiled rosette or other inlay using this or similar materials?

Apply your imagination and let's see what you come up with. In the realm of art there are no real barriers or limits, but one rule I remember is "if it looks good it is".

What a fabulous idea. If some manufacturers use ground up stone, shell blanks, wood, metal, then I cant imagine any reason that an acrylic pen blank wouldnt work (so long as a suitable adhesive is found).
Hmmm, I now have more ideas for my first home-build acoustic....

Be aware that some plastics can shrink with time, and not all plastics will accept a finish.

In the very least, test for finish compatibility before going further.

I'd think pen blanks might be harder to work with than the source material whatever that is.

It's a great idea. Woodcraft stores carry a lot of acrylic pen blanks.

Thanks, I believe the material is acrylic which is the same stuff used for position markers etc.
