If you have a string instrument of any kind that needs fixing, a mistake you made in building a new instrument that you need to "disappear," or a question about the ethics of altering an older instrument, ask here. 'Cause that's what the sound hole is for?

Because generally, if the damage is bad enough to take a top off then it's better to just replace it. Unless there are other considerations, such as a vintage guitar and you must save the top for one reason or another. There's a lot you can do through a soundhole.

Some times the bracing may be intact.

It may be slightly loosed and glued back in place without removal of the top.

A good mirror (or camera exam) use of thin pieces of metal (feeler gauges) and tapping on the soundboard may help decide if the bracing is loose.

Sometimes the bracing can be reglued with the top in place.

The soundboard cracks can easily be reglued without top removal. The top may still shows visible signs of repair after regluing.

Replacing the top after removal would require a lot more work.

That is the key statement right there. You are dealing with binding replacement and a whole lot of glue joint to release.
It is NOT easy
