Kerfing & side braces

Post by Robert Freemond »

I have some old tight grained Vertical grain doug. fir, & am considering using it for Kerfing & side braces. I know of it been used for tone braces, but is there any reason it wouldn't work.

Doug fir is very brittle.
It'll work fine for your side braces (as any wood), but I'm betting it will break very easily at the "kerf-web" on your linings.

I believe that would be lining but what do I know. See:http://www.lmii.com/carttwo/thirdproduc ... er=Kerfing
Doug fir is tough stuff, probably not my first choice but nothing stops you from trying it. It may work just fine.
What I can tell you about Doug fir is that it's acidic and will slow CA clue curing to the point where you can leave stuff clamped for hours and it simply will not grab. Not that anyone would ever even think of trying to glue linings with CA...

Kerfing is the act of using a saw...

So I'm guessing kerfling is the saw slot for purfling?

Thanks David, & you're right - It's too brittle. At 1st thought It seemed that Doug fir would bend well because of it's stringiness, but down at that level of thickness, I guess the fibers won't accommodate.

Thanks to the rest for the new definition Ferfing. I guess I should have used Lining, or "that segmented snaky stuff that goes around the rim" ;-)
