Where do you get you Cypress?

Post by Simon Magennis »

Subject line says it all. I get mine from Madinter in Madrid and a pair of sides from a local German supplier Espen which I cracked a side bending it. I have seen a Turkish company mentioned on occasion but thats about it. Nothing wrong with the madinter stuff, just wondering if I could find somewhere cheaper. I'd give port oxford cedar a try but I've not seen a supplier in Europe.

I can't help you regarding a supplier in Europe.

My personal supply is from Earthsource in Oakland.
Occasionally, I find a perfectly clear, quarter sawn piece in the scrap bin.
Otherwise, it's around $2-3 a board foot.

Allied Lutherie is a great supplier.
While I've had some hiccups from Luthiers Mercantile, they've always made things right in the end.
I suspect that our sponsors at Alaskan Tonewood would be a great supplier of Alaskan Yellow Cedar (also a cypress).

Sorry that I can't be more help.

This guy lists it. I've bought nice rosewood and spruce from him.

akustikwood.com, near Istanbul. Their prices were good (three years ago) and they shipped on approval. I think they were in the process of trying to build up foreign clientele at that time. My entire stash is from them.

Thanks Rod. What I notice is that the UK suppliers are substantially more expensive than (say) Madinter. Naturally, it's hard to make exact comparisions because one persons "A" is another persons "AA". Then of course when you go to a wood place and get a chance to talk directly you might found something on offer that is not published. :D
