help identify instrument please

Post by Rolf A. Cox »

hello,
anyone able to say what instrument, albeit not that skillfully played, comes in at 0'11" perhaps ?
the rhythm is of Eric Donaldson's Cherry Oh Baby from 1971,
imported from Jamaica to Guyana around the same time, so it could be a Guyanese locally produced instrument,
be it wind - or keyboarded, certainly not electronic I thought ...
please have a listen here: https://instaud.io/1gun

thanks ia for any input !

Sounds so much like a double reed, oboe or bassoon but definitely keyboard.

It sounds like an air power chord organ to me.

Sounds like a baroque rackett a.k.a. "sausage bassoon". Especially if it is 11 inches tall.

Joe Zawinul used to play a Hohner Melodica on some Weather Report tunes, that's what I heard here. Yes it's a reed instrument, yes it's a keyboard and exactly what some Jamaican dude would take to the beach to jam on. Breath control on a keyboard 30 years before the Yamaha DX7.
