Blues cane fife dimensions or scale.

Post by Pierre-Alexis Cabiran »

Hello everyone, i am back again on this forum, few years ago i had discussions about hornpipes and bagpipes cane reeds; Now i play bass guitare and sing in a blues band. I would like to find some more informations about the cane fifes made by Otha Turner who played them in a fife and drum blues band. I think there are probabily no plan of them , if i knew the scale of them it help me very much to build one :)

There are quite a few links it you search like this: https://duckduckgo.com/?q=quill+fife+Otha+Turner instead of google.

http://www.folkstreams.net/film,59 There apparently a little film here showing Otha Turner making one.
http://www.sohl.com/quills/quills.htm This page has some numbers for the frequencies but it not for a fife but rather "quills" which may or may not be related.

Thank you Simon for your answer. I already knew the film and the text in which Otha Turner explains and shows the way he makes his fifes. I would like to know which musical scale they have. As far as ican see and hear the lowest hole produice a half tone when it's opened...Idon't know if this type of fife can be overblown...
