How long does it take to pop a soundboard off?

If you have a string instrument of any kind that needs fixing, a mistake you made in building a new instrument that you need to "disappear," or a question about the ethics of altering an older instrument, ask here. Please note that it will be much easier for us to help you decide on the best repair method if you post some pictures of the problem.

How long does it take to pop a soundboard off?

Post by Dennis Duross »

I've not done this before, and it seems like it's taking a long time.

There was no binding to deal with, top is glued with Titebond, and I've got 2 pallete knives going so that I can use one while the other is heating back up in a hot water bath.

So far I've released the bass side upper bout and have about 2/3 of the neck block free. It's taken about 30 minutes so far.

Is this typical?

It helps to heat the area of the seam as you work the blades in. A hair dryer can help a bit and a heat gun even more, but don't let it get too hot or the finish will be damaged. If there is no regard for the finish then a clothes iron can really speed the process of softening the glue.
