Do you typically find historical instruments to takes specs from, or build from available plans, or...?

The former if I can find a suitable instrument in a museum or if the customer wants it based on one.

It's already gone to the customer, so I can't take any new pictures of it, but here is a picture of the same rose design which I carved on a renaissance mandore:
