Wraparound Bridge mounting

Post by Bill Bell »

Do you drill the mounting holes for the bushings at an angle on modern wraparound bridges that have adjustable compensation? The only bridge I could find that specifically said you don't need to angle the mounting was the one from Stew-Mac that has fixed ridges on the top for compensation. I guess it depends on how much adjustabilty an individual bridge has?

The adjustable ones don't really need to be mounted at an angle. They generally have plenty excursion of saddles unless you locate it wrong in the first place. Some people prefer to install it at an angle nevertheless (vintage look?).

The kind of bridge from stewmac you mentioned (LP Jr) should NOT be angled, but you should be careful to install it a milimeter or two closer to the bridge pickup (compared to the place you would install a TOM bridge), because it can only be adjusted in the other way (through the little post screws). You should know also that bridge has a "vintage" compensation that require vintage heavy gauge strings (wounded G sets) to be intonated properly. Just won't work right with modern lighter gauge strings. The LP Jr bridge Guitarfetish sells has a "modern" compensation.

The real vintage wraparound that has no compensation ridge REQUIRES to be installed at an angle.
