X bracing was developed for pinned bridges, which have to deal with the torque on the top. Ladder bracing was used quite successfully for floating bridge systems. That is not to say you can't use an X bracing system with a floating bridge.

Yes, you need some arch to the top, whether you make it a spherical or cylindrical section.
