Use for old thickness planer blades

Post by G.S. Monroe »

I just recently changed out the blades on my thickness planer, and the idea came to mind that they could be used for scrapers.
I worked up a handle out of a piece of scrap wood, and now I find that it works wonderfully as a shaver for making necks.
Below are pictures of the shaver, and an Ash neck for a Mandola that I'm currently building.

Modify that handle a bit more, and you could have a draw knife, too.

good point... these planer blades are expensive, finding practical uses for them when they are no longer useful on the planer just makes sense.
These have been resharpened till they are nubs on the planer barrel, but they are quality steel.

I cut the blades up into 2-3" lengths with a dremel and grind them into micro chisels for inlay work. It's excellent tool steel in most cases

Could end up being a good tool for scraping/blocking sides and bindings too.
