rosette lathe and disk sander?

Post by Bob Hammond »

In another thread, Jon Whitney wishes to make an edge sander for truing segmented glueups for banjo rims. There have been several excellent suggestions.

Last night I ran across this item, which is a shopmade faceplate lathe. Aside from the illustrated purpose, the first thought that came to mind was for making rosettes with it. But then I got to thinking that this might make an excellent disk sander too, by replacing the toolrest with a tiltable platform that also has a slot for a miter gauge or a carriage for stock. As a disk sander, it could be made with a conventional flat plate for 5-6" PSA sanding disks, or if the face plate were shaped as a cone with 2-3 degree pitch, then it could work very nicely as a sander/jointer if the stock were borne on a carriage. I think it would be possible to sand/joint stock that is several inches thick, say the width of a side.
