Yes I know it hard to do from Photos

Ask your wood and other materials questions here. Please DO NOT post pictures and ask us to identify your wood, we have found that accurate ID is nearly impossible, and such discussions will be deleted. Thanks.

Yes, I think you are right. I was going to say that, but I didn't want to be wrong.

Funny, I was going to say it was wood but decided not to. Now that an expert like Larry has confirmed, I feel pretty smart.

And, what does it smell like when sanded a bit?

Looks like East Indian RW to me. Matching sides should be easy to find.

Ha everybody's a comedian and so few of us are actually good at it ;-) Yep it's wood and i don't think it is Brazilian but my nose is out of commission right now but I assume even stuffed up i could tell.. It doe snot appear that oily to me..

Having said that I was thinking Cocobolo, I've never seen IRW quite like this but then I have not been at this very long/\...

Would love to find matching sides..

Indian rosewood has an earthy scent, Brazilian is less earthy and sweeter, and cocobolo is sweet and very spicy scent. If it just "smells like wood" it won't be a dalbergia rosewood.

Kerry, thanks for being a good sport with this.

Thing about (single) photo ID of wood is variety of colors, grain, etc., within any specific species. For instance, your photo shows a cut near a crotch and crotch wood can have luster, grain and color quite different than cuts in a straight bole. Mario has a close guess given those factors per se.

It could be kingwood amongst others.

Yeah I knew it was a long shot to try and figure out what this is, perhaps I can find a local expert who can actually touch the wood and have a chance of figuring it out..

Without sides I'm feeling a bit lost as to what to do with it.. I sort of hate to turn it into a Uke (apologies to Uke builders) I guess and option is to find sides that at least look like a match and market it as a "guess the wood guitar" LOL..

It does kind of look like kingwood.. or about 5 other rosewoods my nose is almost back to normal so I will give it the sniff test.. I seem to recall some other sort of test that used sawdust in water viewed in black light.. sounds very hippie..
