Osage Orange - saw a tree in a nearby park

Post by Simon Magennis »

We went for a walk in the "Kurpark" (Spa Park) in Bad Homburg this afternoon. Behind one of the flower beds there was a scrawny tree - more overgrown bush - which was labelled as Osage orange. First time I've seen one. Nothing in it more than maybe 4 to 5 inches in diameter. Around the 20ft mark in height if memory serves.

Most osage orange (a.k.a. hedge apple) trees were planted in hedge rows and usually kept trimmed back. Their primary lumber use was as fence posts - very rot resistant. Occasionally they grow to 70 ft and can be used for lumber.
