Damaged pot.

Post by Robert Smallwood »

Hi.

I wired a 250K pot as volume for a tele like build.

It works only from 12 o'clock (full on) to 9 o'clock (3/4 on).

I'm a hamfisted solderer. Does this sound like I've damaged the pot?

If not please suggest othyer possible causes.

Thanks,
Rob.

Hi Robert,
Not necessarily, if you've wired it incorrectly you could get these symptoms. Could you post a drawing or photo of what you've done?

It could also be the wrong type of pot, linear taper instead of audio taper.

I think it was a dodgy treble bleed ... which I removed because , well, it's a tele type build.

Also I came across a bunch of ceramic caps labelled 203 & 503 I am guessing they're .022 & .047 uF respectively...can anyone confirm this please? or how do I tell if possible using a multi metre?

Regards,
Rob.

Hi Robert,

Glad you got it sorted.
Here's a good link for reading capacitor codes. So the values you have are 20nF/0.020uF and 50nF/0.050uF.
You are only able to measure the capacitor values with your multimeter if it has a capacitance range - this would be marked with a capacitor symbol.
