Re: Harlequin "Fat Boy", and Weissenborn new builds

Hi Bryan, thanks for the "wow". I made the diamond pattern by cutting each diamond to a templet, I then put down wax paper on my radius disk, and I just glued them in place on my radius dish on my go-bar press. After that glue dries I glued on the back braces, and then glued on 3/4" s...

Harlequin "Fat Boy", and Weissenborn new builds

I am finally done with the Weissenborn I started for the "Something new Challenge". I am very happy with it. I gave it to one of my employees who couldn't put it down. I also finished another project. I built a "Fat Boy" from plans I got from our Plans section. I used Mark's plan...

Re: Weissenborn by Patrick DeGreve

I finally finished the weissenborn !! I had to let this go for a long time, I have been so busy these last 6 months, I just couldn't work on it. I took two trips to Maine, we went to Gettysburg, My son got married, and we had several new shows at CBS that kept me going 24/7. It was a very fun projec...

Re: Advice for first acoustic please! - body size

Hi Jordan, welcome to the forum. Just a few years ago I was starting my first acoustic guitar, and I remember being very reluctant to start. I am so glad I jumped in and built my first. i say first because, as you will hear most of us are so excited about our first, we are hooked, and can't stop bui...

Re: Walnut soundboard?

My older brother has a Taylor jumbo that is all Walnut that sounds amazing, (and looks just as good). I have used walnut quite a bit and I love it for backs and sides. I am almost done with a guitar that uses walnut and avodire as the soundboard. Half of the soundboard is Peruvian Walnut, and the ot...

Re: First Guitar! Favino style Gypsy finally!

It looks great DJ. Congrats of your first. I love walnut. The back has nice figure, and should come to life with the finish. It is going to be a beautiful guitar. Well Done!

Re: Weissenborn by Patrick DeGreve

Here is where I stand so far. I am not sure I will finish on time, but I am having a good time with this project. I have been viewing youtube videos of David Lindley, and others to keep me inspired.

Re: Weissenborn by Patrick DeGreve

I used sitka spruce for the braces that I bought from Alaska Specialty Woods. The plans did not show using a radius on the soundboard, but I decided to use a 15 ft. radius. After the glue dried I shaped the braces and glued the soundboard on the sides.

Re: Weissenborn by Patrick DeGreve

After gluing the two soundboard panels together I routed the recess for the rosette purfing, and rosette. I glued in the purfing, and cut and glued in the pieces for the rosette. I then sanded and scrapped the rosette flush with the top.

Re: Weissenborn by Patrick DeGreve

Then I glued them in place keeping the sides in the form. I used two layers of lining to build them out to 1/4 in. This gives me a nice bit of wood to glue on the top and back.

Re: Weissenborn by Patrick DeGreve

I just got back from a 12 day mini vacation in Maine (it was great), and can resume work on the weissenborn. I had done a bit of work before I left, that I did not post yet, so I will start buy posting those. On this project I pre-bent linings as opposed to cutting kerfing. I have been doing this re...

Re: Vihuela de mano by Patrick Degreve

Hi Robert, I wasn't sure what bracing I was going to use, but decided to have three very light fan braces. The baroque guitar I built from the R. E. Brune plans was just a little bit smaller, and had no braces, but I felt that this vihuela, being a bit wider in the lower bout needed something. I was...

Re: Vihuela de mano by Patrick Degreve

Hi Hans, It is tuned like a 12 string guitar,(in octaves) but what would be the G strings are F#. We used Nilegut strings, which are supposed toe be nylon made to have the tension, and tone of gut strings. Marty may try gut strings at some time, but for now he is very happy with the nilegut.

Re: Weissenborn by Patrick DeGreve

I bent the sides on my Fox style bender. I had to clamp down the back curve at the neck to make it work, but it came out fine.

Re: Weissenborn by Patrick DeGreve

I can now start my weissenborn project. We finished the Survivor Final, and the American Idol Final last week, and The Dancing with the Stars Final. I finished my younger brother's Vihuela de mano last week and delivered an 8 string baritone, and a jumbo to my older brother in Vegas. I have been wat...

Vihuela de mano by Patrick Degreve

My younger brother Marty is a classical guitarist. About a year ago I built him a Baroque Guitar. He came to me last summer and asked me to build him a Vihuela de mano. As it turned out we couldn't find any blueprints for a vihuela de mano. There are only three known existing historic Vihuela de man...

I am glad to see that this challenge is now open. I am looking forward to see what everyone is doing. I am going to build a weissenborn. I have never played a slide before, but a friend at work has been asking me to make one for him for awile. This will certainly be "Something New" for me....

I have built several guitars with bearclaw spruce, from our sponsor Alaska Specialty Woods, bearclaw is very nice. You should be happy with it.
