Normand, Congratulations, you are the 100,000th person to reafim the first law of Lutherie - Nobody can build just one. Do you build your telescopes all from kits or are you building them from the ground up so to speak? Have you considered going from scratch rather than a kit this time with the guit...

Re: Proulx side bender?
It was about ten years ago when I bought mine, but got it from Omega. You will probably need to put a plug on the end as it came with just the 2 wires coming out of the blanket. And get a cheap router speed control for your temperature rheostat to plug it into. And most everybody with a better brain...

Get him Django: the Life and Music, and get him some examples of his playing. What better way to show your support, and could end up being really inspirational.

Re: Great hobby knife - highly recommended
No comparison between a good quality #11 surgical blade and an Exacto blade. But I would caution against using the surgical handle. Fine for surgery because you are never forcefully torqueing the blade in soft tissue. But how most of us use the blades in wood, the blades are subjected to forces they...

Re: Vacuum system
Christ, Another route you might want to consider is using the compressor out of an old refrigerator or freezer. Here's some discussions from years back on vacuum systems: http://www.mimf.com/library/Hot_hide_glue_on_back_braces_in_vacuum_bag_-_first_time_on_dished_board__Picture_-07-26-2009.html htt...

Re: Top/side geometry issue
Gerry,
It might be more useful to you, in visualizing what's going on, to picture that the dome of the top is gradually dropping away from the plane of the strings.
Again, what's needed to make it all fall together right usually all takes place at the heel of the neck.

Re: Top/side geometry issue
Gerry, I may be totally misunderstanding the problem but… Is the neck already on this thing? If not, I don’t know that you have a problem to solve . The angle that the neck joins the body will take care that. As long as you decide the height you want the strings over the soundboard at the saddle, an...

Re: Storage of in progress projects
I found large ziplock bags, similar to freezer bags, but much larger worked really well for me. I could store a full body and neck (detached), and just hung them on a nail on the garage wall. They are made for storing clothes, and I got mine at the grocery store but haven't seen them there in quite ...

to waste the time waiting for the router to spool down to a stop before lifting it from the work at hand. As a result, I took a portion of a finger off, ground off the end of the last phalanges bone, and have wasted 6 hours driving around to finally find an ER that would actually suture it back up, ...

Re: First Build Log - OM 6-String
Eric, My only criticism would be the difference in the segments in the left side of the rosette. Just a matter of personal taste, but I find that, when the segments are as identical repeats of each other as possible, the overall effect of the rosette as a whole just seems to feel more balanced to th...

Re: Rosettes for Newbies
I'd recommend a laminate trimmer with a 1/8 reducing collet over a dremel if you don't do it the hand cut way. And definitely use a spiral downcutting bit, no tear out and a very clean cut. Also recommend getting dyed wood rather than fiber strips for the thin lines. The fiber just doesn't give the ...

Re: Sign of Hot Hide Glue going bad?
Craig, Think of HHglue as Jello. Great media for bacteria and other flora and they digest it. The rate they digest it varies with temperature and number of organisms, and to a certain degree it is more exponential with temperature than linear. Dry, the bacteria can't do anything to it without the mo...

Re: Cedar Siding for a Top?
This thread brought back fond memories. The first "all my own" guitar was a copy of an 1840 Martin I saw pictured in some book that would later in Martin's history be about a size 1. I blew up the 2" X 2" picture at kinko's, figured out some bracing, and went looking for wood. Ba...

Re: Finish that doesn't darken wood
Wow Peter,
It onlyt took about 15 seconds of looking closely at that and I was seasick and couldn't walk straight.
I would recommend including a bottle of Dramamine with the guitar.
