MIMF Redirection Errors

Is it just me, or are others also currently unable to open up the good old MIMF by simply typing “mimf.com”? This problem is new. Recently (last couple of days?) doing so using safari I get an error msg that “load cannot follow more than 20 redirections”. I also recently updated my iPhone OS, so the...

Re: Can woods used in the manufacture of pianos be repurposed?

In my experience, the hardest part is disposing of the significant (and mighty heavy) portions left over after salvaging the good stuff. Apparently a smoky bonfire followed by metal burial is one way to go, but that wouldn’t have gone over well with my neighbors. I’ve disassembled one piano and an o...

Re: Brass binding on Garcia tiger/rosebud

It’s the different rates of expansion/movement that’s the real bugger... but the Tiger guitar is still apparently hanging together, even the brass binding on the fretboard (!). No surprise it weighs a ton. Am I right in thinking that the brass you’re considering for the body will be in the middle(is...

Paul - That youtube link includes a clever little DIY shopvac filter cleaner... why the heck didn't I ever think of that?
Thanks for posting.

This might be helpful, especially the formula for determining pitch down near the end: https://www.instructables.com/id/PVC-Instrument-1/
I think this type of instrument is a “tubulum”...?

Re: I am looking for parts for a 60s era KAPA Minstrel

Have you considered taking the guts off off a stock item like the one in the following link from StewMac and fabricating a new (or "relic-ed") custom face plate that matches the original? Could likely make the flat face plate from easy-to-work brass and then have it chrome plated locally.....

Re: build challenge?

How about, “It used to be a ______, but now it’s a _____”
Every entrant fills in the blanks for themselves.
Could run the gamut from a six to eight string conversion to “It used to be two bicycles and a kitchen sink, but now it’s a saxophone”

Re: Bass guitar into guitar amp?

I’ve long heard stories of torn speaker cones caused by unwary bassists plugging into guitar amps and turning up - but haven’t ever met someone who it happened to first hand. Is this just a tall tale?

Re: I need the collective knowledge of the MIMF and fast.

This would take absolutely all of the fun out of making it yourself, but given the tight time frame... apparently party rental places rent this sort of thing - if the Dad-skit budget allows, might be a quick fix.

Re: tuners

Hello Bob. Unfortunately your pics don’t seem to have posted - but if they’re the kind of heads I think they are they’ll have a knurled knob on the backside and a recess in the post that appears to be where the string should go. Unscrew the knob all the way and the string hole will slowly open up in...

“Gibsons are the best guitars ever made for Luthiers” ... I think somewhere in the great beyond Leo Fender is chuckling and nodding his head in agreement.

Re: Tremelo Part

Hi Richard, and welcome. I believe you're looking for what FR calls a replacement "saddle assembly". If you go to Stewmac.com and search for "Floyd Rose Tremolo Instructions" you'll be presented with a choice of parts diagrams for the different types of Floyd Roses. At worst, if ...

Go to Amazon and search for "air wedge". Lots of neat options for a fairly small investment.
I saw these a while ago but have yet to get around to trying one. If you do, please share your experiences with a post.

Re: Woodworking Workbench

My two cents: Build it like a battleship; heavy and thick. Bolt it to the wall or floor if you're able. Provide enough overhang at the perimeter to allow clamping all along the edge. Include a sacrificial tempered masonite top secured with a few countersunk brass screws around the perimeter. Don't m...
