Old Jazz Bass issues.

I took out the old Jazz bass last week. I really should test the equipment before the gig. The volume seemed low but at the time I didn’t have time to investigate. I finally got around to it yesterday. The bridge control didn’t seem to work. The neck was fine. When the bridge control was all the way...

Re: Double bass neck isue

Looks like a neck reset is in order.

If it were me. I would.

1 remove neck
2 remove fingerboard
3 straighten fingerboard with heat, steam, and clamping.
4 flatten neck, plane and sand till dead flat.
5 replace fingerboard
6 reset neck to proper angle
7 check fingerboard and plane flat if needed.

Re: Who cuts and cures their own wood?

I don't use paint. I use a product made just for that it dries to a waxy sort of finish. http://www.uccoatings.com/Products/ANCHORSEAL

Re: Who cuts and cures their own wood?

I have cut and cured lots of wood. Cutting thin when green results in potato chips. Seal the end grain as soon as the tree is cut, seal again after boards and splits are made. Cut or split no less than 1 inch thick. I allow at least 6 inches at each end for waste. I cut my boards 9 feet long if poss...

Re: Speaker grill

Total time about 4 hours but I am slow. No special tools just some tapered pegs you can get from the cane supplier and a awl but everyone should have one. Lots of instructions on line.

Re: Speaker grill

No finish on the cane. The frame the cane is on is 5/8 inch thick so the cane is 5/8 inch away from the baffle board. I routed the back of the frame 1/8 inch deep to leave a space for all the knots. I used natural cane because I had it but there is a plastic cane that would work might be better. The...

Woven by hand on an oak frame. Holes are 1/4 inch spaced a little less than 3/4 inch.

Speaker grill

I went searching for a grill covering. Being cheap and not needing a large piece I thought of some left over cane from a chair project. The box is waiting for a warm day to get coated with truck bed liner.

Banjo case

Finally got around to building a case for the banjo I built many years ago. It is waiting for a warm day to go outside for a couple coats of black truck bed liner. After it's painted there is a groove in the lid that will get a foam gasket to seal it. The foam liner was a challenge to fit but worked...

Re: Three bad pots in a row?

I agree with David. I have worked for 39 years repairing industrial electronics and instrumentation. Many thousands of pieces of equipment have crossed my bench, not once do I recall seeing a ground wire soldered to a pot case. It seems only musical instrument electronics uses this bad practice. I h...

Re: Woodworker Friend

Most table saws even cheap ones can be "tuned". It took several hours the first time, but I have my blade within 0.0005 inch referenced to the miter slot and 0.001 to the rip fence. Even new out of the box a lot of table saws could use a "tuning".

Re: Resources for Wood?

See if you can find a small local sawmill (man with a band-saw mill). Explain what your looking for. Most of the small sawyers love their wood and would like to see the material go to a good use. I once was picking up some ash for my kitchen cabinets and got to talking about spruce for a mandolin. H...

Re: Bushings for Grover Hercules banjo tuners

Find a local machine shop, Should take a few minutes to machine a couple of new ones. Many years ago my uncles ran a machine shop, I remember people walking with small one time parts. They liked those kind of jobs. What is the material? Brass would be easy, if they are plated then that could be done...

Re: Resistance switch for HB coil cut

Potentiometers can be used as variable resistors or voltage dividers depends on the circuit. I didn't watch the video. I would need to see the circuit diagram to answer your question.

This may also work, after all this will not be a high torque application.

Re: Granite flats

No argument here the methods work. My point is you don't need to spend big bucks on a granite slab for woodworking. But if your flattening the bottom of a plane then dye and scrape is the preferred method. I had my plane bottoms, table saw alignment bar, and 90 degree reference block ground by my ma...

Re: Granite flats

Murry Not going to argue your methods they work. But having been in standards and calibration all my working years. The proper way of flattening anything with a granite slab is not to throw a piece of sandpaper on it and grind away. A blue transfer dye is applied to the granite block, the object to ...
