You just can't beat rosewood or ebony to hide all our flaws.
Thank you, Barry. Hiding flaws seems to be the nature of the craft, eh? The more flaws I make the better I'll get. 😎

Re: First Guitar as done as it's going to be.

Yep Although I may have found a way to stop that cycle. My current odd attempt at an unusual design is fretless. Any intonation issues will be easily explained by my lack of playing ability so I can still think I built it well. We will see. I should probably finish this summer if I don’t get too si...

Re: Laminated Veneer Sides.

You might not need to use the bender. I used a veneer like that on the inside of my laminated sides. The outer two layers were much thicker and did go through the bender. Then inner layer of veneer I just used without bending when I did the lamination and it worked just fine. I use a separate jig fo...

Side Port For Real

Well, OK. I held my breath and did a sound port with binding on guitar number 3. I am going to use rosewood for the binding so I did that for the port too. The black veneer is not super visible here but will probably stand out more with the final finish. num-3-side-port - 2.jpeg num-3-side-port - 3....

Re: Hello - just joined

Welcome! I'm still very much a rookie here and have learned a ton from the group. Questions get answered by some very experienced builders. That's a huge help.

I grew up in Grand Rapids, MI and know Holland well. I also miss the lakes and beaches and get back there from time to time.

Re: First Guitar as done as it's going to be.

I like it. The woods look really good together and the rosette is beautiful. Hopefully it plays as good as it looks! Thank you! Um, well, er, I hope so too. I'm not a great player so I can't judge. I had to do a lot of adjustments including removing the fretboard and moving it slightly. Getting con...

Re: First Guitar as done as it's going to be.

Looks great; nice work. Hearing the first one is always something special! Thanks, it was a very nice moment. I only wish I could play better. I really like the vibe of the walnut and cedar together. It is nice and understated looking but not at all in a boring way. I was surprised when the WRC tur...

First Guitar as done as it's going to be.

Well, since I'm working on guitars 3 and 4 I thought I'd do a followup on number 1. I have the intonation as good as I can get it with this fretboard and bridge. It's not bad and I'll never be satisfied anyway. The top is western red cedar from a piece of siding. The back, sides, and neck are walnut...

Re: My Side Port Binding Process (LONG)

Fantastic tutorial. I am thinking of using elliptical soundports on both the bass side upper bout and the side of my next archtop, so this is extremely helpful. I am trying to figure out which side to put the side port seam of the binding, towards the top of the guitar or the back. Initially I was ...

Re: My Side Port Binding Process (LONG)

The tapered plug for shaping, laminating and gluing is genius. Thanks, Barry. I don't know where I got the idea but I suspect it has been done like this before. Thanks for the tutorial. I know how much work that can be. I used to this for a living for my students. I had to explain complicated compu...
