Re: Patents

It partly depends on where you live. In the United States patents are basically for processes, although there is a specialized design patent. Most shapes, etc., are trademarked, not patented, but every country has different rules. Although I have never attempted to file a patent application for a sh...

Congratulations, Eric! I hate to say I even remember when you started on this "a while back." Glad you brought it to fruition and it meets with your daughter's approval!

Re: A new interview with Melvyn Hiscock, author of "Make Your Own Electric Guitar"

And, quite sadly, with the third edition imminent, Melvyn just passed away. He was apparently as much of a force in the aircraft world as he was in lutherie, and equally loved in all his circles. RIP!

Re: New board heading?

Good idea. We recently added a forum for Ukeleles in response to a member request, so it is certainly a possibility. We'll discuss it. Thanks for the idea! In the meantime, also check out CNC Zone. I haven't been on it in a while, but it was pretty well run back in the day. Seems to be shifting a li...

Re: Taller Humbucker Bobbins

Most public libraries around where I live have 3D printers (though not all of them are open right now due to the pandemic). Just upload your file and pick up your creation. Check your local library if you need a one-off.

Re: Wow! Rulers Are Not the Same! Recommend An Accurate Straight-Edge?

@Paul, when doing things like laying out a non-standard fretboard, a long rule is invaluable. Guitars are more or less standardized, but other instruments are not. The cumulative errors trying to use a short rule would be unacceptable. I build folk and world instruments, and a good yard/meter rule h...

Re: Wow! Rulers Are Not the Same! Recommend An Accurate Straight-Edge?

First, be very aware that rulers and straight edges are two entirely different things, and are not necessarily found together on the same instrument! If you need a straight edge, buy a straight edge. Our sponsor LMI sells some inexpensive acrylic straight edges designed for guitar making. I think th...

Re: Historical approach to the tone hole position on a reed instruments

Sorry, no pictures or old experiments laying around. Most got discarded in our last move. I think I mostly used the small reamer off a Swiss army knife to enlarge the holes, which works well on PVC. Very controllable, and you can easily hold it so it cuts the walls perpendicular to the flute. A norm...

Very cool! I've always wanted one. Maybe I can print one at the library now. Here's another guy trying to 3D print racketts , with links to modeling software and historical info. That paper mentions that the Toronto Consort put out a A step-by-step guide to the construction of a Renaissance rackett ...

Lots of cheaper violins have white fretboards that have been ebonized. Check your favorite supplier for fingerboard stain. Relatively cheap!
