Re: Why Is Thickness Sander Motor Stalling
That 16 gauge cord will hurt you a lot. The load carrying capacity of a circuit is determined by the smallest wire involved, which is how fuses work - they are smaller than the rest of the wire so they burn out before the wire goes. I bet you will find that your cord gets hot when the sander is work...

Re: The next MIMF challenge- ideas anyone?
Although I doubt I will be able to participate this time around I would like to encourage keeping the overall concept pretty simple and allowing people to do as they are inspired to within that general framework. There is also no particular stigma to reusing one of the previous challenge ideas. The ...

After you sand, take a razor blade to scrape the binding just enough to make it clean again.

Re: Mistakes made while building early guitars
The reason it happened is because I have parts, tools, scraps of wood, and all kinds of crap piled on my bench, so there's no place to put anything down. I need to learn to straighten things up more often. Ouch! And doubly so because my bench has always been in pretty much the same condition. I'm a...

Re: Drying Wood Quickly
Absent a kiln I'd really doubt it would be dry enough to be stable (which is really the issue) by April. I would try for a spot in the kiln or else look for wood that is already dry.
Oh, and that's a pretty cool design, too!

Re: Fret re-dressing
Mark, I'm not a repairman, but I've done a few "fret dressing" jobs for friends to gain experience. If I were to offer to dress the frets on someone's guitar it would involve all of the above. I sort of view it as trying to make the fretwork as close to perfect in all respects as I can. I'...

That is full-on gorgeous! How are those roller pots from a players perspective and where did you find them? They look like they would be a really cool addition to a bass I'm working on.

Mine is a 300 Watt halogen bulb. It is actually barely hot enough and I normally run it full on. I think I may step up to a 500 Watt at some point.

Here is my bending pipe.
Note that it is mounted to a long piece of 2x6 that I then clamp to my bench. I do that for a lot of jigs, tools and stuff to make my bench more versatile.

Re: Mistakes made while building early guitars
I think my biggest mistake, and one that I continue to make, is that I become paralyzed in the planning and analysis phase and don't get to actually building. My woodworking chops are good enough to hide just about any mistake, but I obsess about it so much that it takes me twice as long to do anyth...

You can also get concrete tile backer board, which works well. I didn't bother with any backer on mine and it hasn't shown any desire to burst into flames yet - but you never know.

Re: picture file size test
It looks to me like monitor resolution and quality have a lot to do with it, but there is (at least on my system) a clear improvement in detail at the larger size. I'm not sure it is enough to jump up and down about, but overall I think keeping the size restriction at the 50K level may be detrimenta...

Thanks for those pictures of your process, Arnt. I now have a serious case of spruce envy! Personally I like the somewhat irregular stuff better than the cosmetically perfect pieces, but I'm odd in other ways as well.

Lots of band aids! Also, keep several bottles of super-glue removed stashed at strategic points around the shop. <g>
