Re: Third Classical

Thanks guys. I think he'll be picking it up on friday. So, hopefully I'll get to play it one more time before I hand it off. That's half the fun of the build, right? :)

Re: Third Classical

Here's a quick video of me playing a short piece on the guitar. Recorded on an iPad for what that's worth.

Third Classical

Here's the most recent build. This one is actually for a young man (16yrs) who won a guitar competition held at UTPB last March. (West Texas Guitar Festival) It's not absolutely perfect, but I am glad for the opportunity to build for someone. The guitar has a great sound and I hope to upload a link ...

Re: Fret Crowning File- which one is the one?

I'm still pretty new at building. However, not being a man of means, I have a version that's working for me that you might try. I use a flat file along the ends to flush the edges with the board at close to 35 degrees. I then use the rough side of a cheap, yet flat, sharpening stone to level the fre...

Thank you Bob. I do enjoy building too much to stop. Be posting a third soon. Again, thank you for your thoughts.

Re: Arching guitar backs and their function

Thank you Jeff. When I get my current build strung up I'll see what I'm close to. Right now I'm putting finish on it and the bridge is not yet in place. That being said, tapping on both sides gives me close to 1/2 step difference right now (which I think is one semitone across the pond.) I'll tap ag...

Re: Arching guitar backs and their function

Thank you Mario and Michael. That's what I was thinking, just wanted to be sure I had it right. Is there a particular resonant frequency that I should be shooting for with the back stiffness? I ask that, but realize that it's probably dependent upon other variables in the guitar, style of build, and...

Arching guitar backs and their function

Okay, I'm currently on my third build and had a question posed to me to which I had no answer. (And am not having much luck finding an answer in the library, but I know must be there.) So, maybe some greater minds would like to chime in? Here's the question: What, if any, is the acoustic function of...

Re: 2nd Guitar - Classical loosely Santos Based

Doug, thanks! As you can tell, I still have some bugs to work out. :) Don't tell Chuck, but I think I went over to the Dark Side as I was finishing this guitar... I sprayed the first few layers of shellac. At least there's cookies...

Re: 2nd Guitar - Classical loosely Santos Based

Hey Clay. Thanks. The blackwood was very hard. Dulled my tools very quickly and took a long time to get to thickness. The sides bent satisfactorily except that I never got them to be "wobbly-pliable" like you might see Indian rosewood in some acclaimed youtube videos. It certainly made me ...

2nd Guitar - Classical loosely Santos Based

Well, with much fear and trepidation, :D , I'm posting some photos of my second guitar build. This one I actually built for a friend of mine who, lucky for me, paid for the wood. Was my first try at a rosette, side bending, and because he requested it: inlay, fanned-frets (640mm - 660mm), and raised...
