Re: Salvaging elm and basswood

Just a pic of some useful shop tools from elm. Elm is good for small things that take advantage of the interlocked grain. These hold downs are easy to make and and are tough. They're excellent for the drill press too.

Re: Salvaging elm and basswood

I have a word of caution about using elm for an acoustic. I build my first guitar from elm (in the library), and it's pretty sensitive to changes in humidity and temperature. In fact, after the third time that the soundboard split in the middle, I left it alone and surprisingly it hasn't harmed the ...

Re: reasonably price variable height bench

Gordon, The bench itself is pretty steady - but I can wiggle the entire bench on the locked casters (it also comes with feet). The powder-coated steel frame is about 11-12 gauge thick. The top has 14 threaded inserts embedded in the underside, and is fastened to the columns with four M6 machine scre...

Re: reasonably price variable height bench

First thing, will be to add some cabinets to the base, with drawers for tools.

Next, I may make another top for it, something like a Paulk design, and that could support a vise or clamping mechanisms.

reasonably price variable height bench

Hello,

I like to work with an object at elbow height.

I found this at Home Depot today for $200. The chinawood top is ok, but the steel base, elevation mechanism, and drawers are pretty good for the price. The height is adjustable from 26 to 42 inches, which should ease some aches and pains.

Re: Steinway factory tour

Clay- Ah - a mystery revealed.

I think that there was something in the voiceover and videography that suggested to me that it was a separate piece that was added - a layer of paper.

Re: Steinway factory tour

Clay, the longrain lamination was something that I noticed too. I did some initial tests with uke sides using hide glue, but I didn't pursue it. Not because it was difficult or bad, I just got involved with something else. Maybe I'll see if I still have them around. Also of interest was the paper me...

Re: Makers Knife

If you want to make your own knives or reconfigure old knives, that's fine. It's quite easy to make good knives from O-1 tool steel. The key is to achieve the correct heat for hardening and then tempering them. I recently purchased some precision ground O-1 stock from WTTool.com and the hardening an...

A manometer for calculation of airflow might be useful for the development.

an 'air-fume ejector' for a spray booth?

Obviously, this is an old-timely illustration of a forced draft spray booth, but I think the concept may work just fine. Any opinions?

Re: safety shoes for woodworkers

It looks cute but the question is how comfortable it is on the feet? I did need to carve out the instep a little bit to fit into them, but once they're on they aren't floppy, and they aren't heavy. Actually, they're quite comfortable standing still, or walking outside on the lawn - warm and dry. On...

shimpo pottery wheel for spinning radius dishes?

Hello, Someone gave me a Shimpo 21 variable speed pottery wheel. Our House Artist isn't particularly interested in pottery (busy with glass & painting), so I'm wondering if anybody else ahs repurposed it by placing a radius dish on the 12" platten. It draws 400 watts and spins at 0-250RPM, ...

Re: safety shoes for woodworkers

The shoes are quite old but show no signs of cracking. They're made from watersoaked poplar, and were hand carved inside with a spoon auger and hook knife. The outside was shaped with a block knife which operates like a papercutter. Here's a video: https://youtu.be/dt5BLJhiMO0 They're pretty comfort...

Re: Dust-mageddon!! Dust bag attachment help needed

I bought bungee cord at the hardware store, guesstimated the desired stretch, and then inserted the ends of the bungee cord into a thin-walled brass tube and punched the tube to lock the cord in place. It worked for me.

safety shoes for woodworkers

Hey, my 93y/o neighbor (born in Germany) gave me a pair of shoes. They're actually pretty comfortable but best worn outdoors in the soft earth.

Pretty natty, eh?

Re: Handcrafted Luthier Tools

Like many others, I've made a number of tools - a frewire bender, fingerboard slotting fixtures (standard and fan-frets), and maybe few other things that I can't remember. Just search in this forum and the old library for my name.
