Re: 78 gibson j-45 twisted neck
Clay-Yes this is the guitar. The cracks on the back were an easy fix. Rodger- the top is not sunburst(although the back of the neck is) It has a large crack along the bottom of the sound hole that appears to have been repaired with a hot glue gun. You may be right about it being re finished as some ...

Re: 78 gibson j-45 twisted neck
Thanks for the replies
The owner aquired the guitar (for little money) becouse of the name on the head stock so a new neck is out. I'll try heat and see how far I can get. I wonder if a three piece neck is as weak at the head stock as a one piece?
Thanks
Steven

78 gibson j-45 twisted neck
I have 78 j 45 with neck twisted. It's a three piece neck and stamped as a factory 2nd. The fret board has deep groves at the first three frets(I think the original owner only knew G C D). So do I try to just plane the FB flat, pull it and plane the neck and replace the board, or do I just make it p...

Just for an update
I made a new fret board for it and sent it on it's way.
Thanks for the replies.

Re: 1920's Gibson mandolin
An interesting thing on the fret board- all the markers are off just a bit. At the 15th fret, the fret covered a part of the dot. It looks like the dot was drilled after the fret or someone carefully filed the fret to uncover the dot.

Thanks for all the replies. This is a fun link- but I'm a bit confused about a single action truss rod after seeing page 12.

Re: Brainstorming for a simple guitar for practicing on
I'm on board with this Douglas. Nice story-I've grown up as a watermen/boat maker here in Delmarva. You could use simple screws with a hole for tuners for the practice neck as being "in tune" doesn't matter. I would like to see a challenge and would participate. maybe a "build in a da...

Re: Brainstorming for a simple guitar for practicing on
Douglas Something like that could be made very easy. Recycled strings, tapered pegs for tuners, slots in something to hold a knot in the string for a bridge. Frets would be the biggest hurdle-maybe 60 lb mono filament glued in shallow groves? I might just make something for the fun of it. Also- My h...

Re: cello broken neck
Hey Steve
Since I'm not sure how easy it would be to remove the rest of the neck I'm thinking about your shim idea. The crack line is not straight so I'm wondering about so other method then a saw kerf. Ideas?

Re: cello broken neck
Thanks for the advice
I'm not sure I understand the skewer. Are you talking about a hardwood dowel on the center of the heel and then a smaller bamboo dowel closer to the point of the heel?
Steve-if you click on the pic it gets pretty big. I like that about this new forum software.
Thanks

Used the fronds on some fried perch(along with a little old bay of course) and tasted very good. Not as over whelming as the seeds can be. Thanks for the ideas.

Re: Brainstorming for a simple guitar for practicing on
I think your first avanue has merit but not so much in learning but training and strenthening muscles. http://www.musiciansfriend.com/accessories/shredneck-practice-guitar-neck I think learning does require some sort of both hand interaction. On another note, we often come across old abandoned necks...

Re: cello broken neck
Thanks for the replies. This is a recent china made cello so I'm worried about what type glue was used if I remove the rest of the neck. The reason I am leaning toward HHG is i believe it doesn't show a glue line as much as other glues. I believe this is a factory defect because there is signs of fi...

Re: 1920's Gibson mandolin
The FB came off very easily and the dove tail seems tight. The wedge under the fret board over the body is just made of shims and what seems like putty. I am wondering if anyone knows if the wedge is supposed to be there. Nothing is lose or shifted have shifted and it seems to be designed to have a ...

cello broken neck
I mainly build/repair guitars but lately alot of different instuments keep showing up. I have this cello in with neck snapped off at the heel. The break is clean and goes togather perfectly. Is there any reason not to glue it back togather (hhg) while the neck and and heel are still on the body? The...

Re: 1920's Gibson mandolin
Thanks for the replies I'm not that familiar with vintage mandolins and the headstock logo looks very cheesy. You can clearly see the edge of it under the finish. My plan was to just pull the FB and level the neck and wedge. I'll see how solid the neck feels with the FB removed. The owner only paid ...
