That's a "P" ???
I searched for San, Qan, Can... and started pouring through Images of just Vintage Guitar Logos looking for something that matched.
I'll call this one of my "Senior Moments".
Thanks Mark

Re: Help with Identifying a brand logo
There is no serial number that I can find... think it might be one of the early Ibanez "Lawsuit" guitars? I usually will remove brand logos and change the peg head shape a bit when I re-purpose such necks. This is the first I've come across with pearl inlay, I wonder if it is obscure enoug...

Help with Identifying a brand logo
I go around the yard sales and flea markets buying up "parts" to build cigar box guitars. I came upon this neck and started to do some restoration work. It's a mahogany bolt on neck, and was painted with dark green automotive paint. When I scraped the headstock I came upon a very nicely do...

Re: Holy Braces, Batman!
Well, from an architectural background and viewpoint, the old way of building floors and ceilings involved solid beams for support, and current methods have moved towards triangular joists and "H" beams. I can see where the advantages can be weight wise. Properly built a guitar with such b...

Re: Plans for a Puerto Rican Cuatro?
I've built both a Cuatro and a Tiple, they are both rather uncomplicated instruments to build. There is no hard standard for the scale length, only an approximate VSL. There are numerous line drawings and vector graphics of the body shape on line, download one and use it to do a lay out on butcher p...

Experimentation is great... keep us informed.
I'm not expecting that anything great will come of this, most likely you will simply confirm and verify what others suspect.

Re: 3 or 4 piece backs
I've been considering going to a 4 piece back (and top soundboard) for dreadnaught acoustics. I would disagree that wider boards are easier to work with. If you purchase your soundboards, then that may be the case, but I cut and plane my own and there is a limit to what can be made with the shop equ...

Re: How to fix sheared screws in headstock?
The last time this happened to me, I took my dremil cut off wheel and cut a slot into the screw stub. This only left a narrow cut in the wood but allowed me to back the screw out with a small slot head screwdriver. The narrow cut is much easier to repair than filling an oversize hole. I tapped in a ...

Victoria Cypress?
It's also called Golden Cypress, and it's from "Down Under" in Australia and New Zealand.

Re: local wood acoustic
I agree that here on the gulf coast we have a marvelous selection of local woods to choose from.
As a builder of Folk Instruments, having local sourced woods is a big advantage, as true folk instruments are distinctly regional in flavor and style.

Bald Cypress is Awesome. I've been building dulcimers and guitars out of recovered bald cypress here in Florida for close to a year now. I recently built a slimline acoustic hollow body guitar that sounds fabulous and weighs less than 6 lbs. A video sound check of this guitar is here... http://www.y...

Re: Alaskan Yellow Cedar for Flamenco Back And Sides.
Personally I would suggest Southern Bald Cypress from the Gulf coast of the United States. The wood has excellent tone, very tight straight grain, and light weight. I recently built a slimline guitar from gulf cypress that weighs in at 5lb 8oz.

Just a thought, if you installed a pair of drawer rolling guide rails for the block to ride on, and an adjustable screw lift to elevate the jig upwards into the sanding block, and used a flywheel motor to move the sanding block back and forth like the old steam locomotives, .... hmmm

French Polish Shellac and Waterslide Decals?
I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with applying waterslide decals on a shellac finish? I'm about to dive into putting an amber shellac/ french polish finish on a maple headstock. I normally use a spray lacquer finish when I'm using waterslide decals, but this will be a first try with french...

As we are talking about a novice in the shop, I would like to take an opportunity here to remind everyone about Safety. Sharp tools can be dangerous, Dull ones even more so... Familiarize yourself on tool safety, and some basic first aid too. Get into the habit of wearing face shields and dust masks...

I take those little incidents as opportunities for decorative inlays, and like Mark suggested, a contrasting laminate (cut as a nice silhouette

Re: Wouldn't it be nice to be able hear finished instruments?
I would love to see such videos, as well as post a few of my own for "official" critique. Sadly much of the feedback and criticism on the more public websites (YouTube) are not very helpful at times when someone is seeking to refine their luthiery techniques. Audio files are nice but I agr...

Re: Soundhole (f-hole) size
One of the issues that I keep getting asked about is feedback/distortion from monitor speakers. I've been experimenting with alternatives to the traditional sound holes in the soundboard. It seems to me though that f-holes produce less feedback than circles even though they are not as efficient acou...
