Quite an optical display! The electronics look like they're floating on the top. Nice work.

Consider using aluminum foil wrapped foam insulation for a curtain. Or maybe build a light frame to hold it that is easily removable. Like a shoji screen.

Re: Carbon fibre rods and truss rod adjustability

My truss rod measures 11.5mm deep so I modeled a 14mm depth and was also planning to cap it with wood. I don't know if 2.5mm will be thick enough but I was afraid to cut the channel too deep. Capping the truss rod channel like that is how I was taught to do it. When I was building my 8th or so I th...

Re: bandsaw blade question

So the first very simple question is: slow cutting=blunt blade? Given two blades, 1/2" x 4tpi and 3/8" x 10tpi, which blade would you use for which guitar making tasks? Thanks. Ripping 2" hardwood shouldn't be a problem with a half inch blade. Obviously ebony will cut slower than map...

Re: Carbon fibre rods and truss rod adjustability

... My plan was to put one on each side of the truss rod about 10mm or so to either side of the truss rod. Necks are Sapele laminated to achieve vertical grain. Two of the necks are two-piece lams and the third is three-piece Sapele with Black Walnut sandwiched between. I'm wondering about how this...

Re: advise for altered approach for helping a first timer

I’m going to follow his lead on how deep of a dive he wants to take and how ready he is. I’m hoping the process leads to conversations. I don’t want to be giving lectures, I want to be offering answers. I found that teaching is a learning experience. I'm sure you'll provide a good example. If there...

Re: advise for altered approach for helping a first timer

Making acoustic instruments is a goal directed process involving a lot of self discipline. You can make a good guitar just following a plan without much thought past accurate joinery. But even if he only makes one guitar, understanding some of the basic principles of sound production I think would b...

Re: advise for altered approach for helping a first timer

Have a dimensional plan to work from hanging somewhere easily visible. Break the work down to the parts/processes: neck, rim, back, top, bindings, finish, etc. List the steps sequentially in basic outline form for each and print it out for immediate reference. That way you could go from one job to a...

Re: removing epoxied fretboard

... Will the epoxy start to release at about the same temp as TB would? In my experience epoxy glues are the easiest to separate with heat. The problem with heating one part is the potential for separation of the underlying structure. The neck shaft shouldn't be a problem, but the braces and center...

Re: Roast your own Ash

Not sure by the original post whether you're aiming at moisture extraction or coloration. If you are trying to color the wood UV light may be the way to go. I've been roasting sugar pine to extract the resin in the wood. This may not be pertinent to what you're trying to do, but here is some general...

Re: Martin 0-18 with multiple problems

One option would be to add thickness at the bridge from underneath to take up the string windings. Stew Mac sells a piece of brass (I think) pre drilled for a Martin size. Easy enough to fabricate something of that nature and you could try it out before gluing it in. Another option would be to cut t...

Re: Triple O - Dovetail neck doesn't seat - Photos

The mating surfaces of the sides are rounded and the neck surfaces are flat. I like to under cut the inside of the neck surface leaving about 1/8" of contact area. The sides I carefully sand perpendicular to the centerline of the top. Even so, a quarter degree offset will skew the line and for ...

Anybody know any place in Charlotte NC that might have it? You didn't say where you were so I figured you were talking mail order. Re: Ugh! Big Bad Router Screw-Up. Suggestions Please.

I use the same method as you do, including the tape to adjust the cut. I cut the tape askew on the bearing to make sure there isn't a lump in one spot that will transfer the irregularity to the cut. The bearing is a guide and is pressed up against the sides and doesn't spin. It will "read"...

Re: Ugh! Big Bad Router Screw-Up. Suggestions Please.

It looks like the purfling line has minimal damage and that is what will be visible. Agreed; new end trim. If the back bindings aren't in yet then it's easier. When I mess up a purfling line I'll simply make another cut and add another line or two. As long as there is enough support from the linings...
