Re: Now it's awl messed up!

For me …
First stop: steam.
Another option, but I haven't used it yet although I got a bag of it, is Lycopodium, apparently popular enough in the violin making world.

Re: Thickness sander-- build or buy?

Neither. Find a wood work place in a reasonable distance which is willing either to rent you time on their machine or run the stuff through for you at a reasonable price. I am thinking of the kind of machines they can run doors or bigger stuff through and electronic push button controls for the thic...

Re: another router (trimmer) question. bit speed

... One "lubricant" I would avoid putting on bearings is WD40. Thanks for that. That is something I might have grabbed. :-) A now deceased, German maker, told me he used engine oil for lubricating tuners. Another make I know use bicycle chain oil as his go to oil. I recently got a bottle ...

Re: Broken router collet. Why?

Just to complete the story. My replacement collets came along with a 1/4" flush trim cutter which I haven't used yet. Once I opened up the fresh packet, I realized that the collet was much tighter in its not that what I remember the broken one to be. So it could very well be that I damaged the ...

Re: another router (trimmer) question. bit speed

Thanks indeed for the responses. Kind of inline with my own gut feelings. So long as the load is low it shouldn't be significant. I emailed the place I bought it from and they told me that the put the same bit into a kit with the GFK600 so they reckon it is just fine despite the printed listing. @ C...

another router (trimmer) question. bit speed

Reminder … I'm a router newbie. I got myself a 1/4" flush trim bit with a 1/4" shank for my Bosch GFK600 mentioned in this thread. (http://www.mimf.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=5392) The Bosch is fixed speed 33,000. On the shank of the bit it says "n max 24,000" - there is ...

Re: Guitar Rack

Peter's picture is superb. Anytime anyone gets a bit of an earful from the other half we can not only show them this picture but also point out that it was his wife kids gave him (some of) the components. It might also be a good justification for buying that compound saw. :-)

Re: Broken router collet. Why?

That is a really delicate collet design for a trim router…. Tacky is the word you are looking for. :-) When I bought the thing, the Bosch Colt routers were getting great reviews. This is the Euro version or to be more specifically the UK version. The Euro version takes 6mm and 8mm bits. The UK vers...

Re: Broken router collet. Why?

I doubt if the photos really tell any story except how small the collet is (1/4"). I would need a fancier camera to get a more useful image. Anyway, just for completeness sake, this is what it looks like now. My new collet should arrive sometime next week and then I can continue with my current...

Re: Broken router collet. Why?

Thanks both. I don't really know how tight I made it. I doubt if it was different from the few other occasions I have used it. I have just a short spanner for tightening it so it is not really possible to crank it a huge amount. The only thing I have done with the router his cut binding ramps for 3 ...

Broken router collet. Why?

I was trying to set up my Bosch GK600 (colt) the other day and the cutter went flying through the room. When I open the nut and looked at the collet, it was in four pieces. What is the likely cause? Overtightening? Or is this something that just happens to routers once in a while? I ordered two repl...

Re: Is this style dust collector a complete waste of space?

The HF was simply as an example. This stuff is much more expensive in Europe. A 2HP with a cartridge filter costs about x3 the HF example. http://www.axminster.co.uk/axminster-hobby-series-fm300bc-extractor-filter-cartridge-package-deal-717658 - they have a cheaper one but it is 1hp. From what I hav...

Re: Question about Flush trimming router bits.

Thanks. I had a look at Wealden. Thanks. I didn't see anything with a 6mm 1/4" shank but it may just be my growers. However, they have a big range of barings so I will check and see if one will fit the cutter I have for bindings. They ship throughout the EU. I looked up the silly little mm. Nev...

Re: Question about Flush trimming router bits.

Thanks for the info to date. I will not be using it handheld. It will be in a jib. Another ever more elementary question. When trimming to prepare for routing the binding channel, does it need to be absolutely flush? I can get a bearing for an existing cutter but it would leave 1mm still standing up...

Question about Flush trimming router bits.

The question. I want to get a flush trim cutter the initial purpose of which is to trim the tops and backs of guitars prior to routing out the ledges for binding. I am looking at this http://www.axminster.co.uk/axcaliber-flush-trim-cutters-bottom-bearing-ax803281 UK supplier as I haven't located a l...

Re: Issue with h.h.g. - very "runny."

Problem solved. Not at all what I though it was. Operator error. :-) I usually heat up my glue in plastic yoghurt tubs. Turns out that the ones here (Spain) are even thinner than what I am used to in Germany. So what was happening is that after using a bit of the glue the plastic was cracking and le...

Issue with hot hide blue - very "runny."

First time I have every had this issue. My usual method is make a batch of glue, set it set and then cut up the "jello" into little chunks which I keep in the fridge. I followed this for a new batch and it worked ok. I decided to transfer the stuff I had in the fridge to the freezer to see...

Is this style dust collector a complete waste of space?

Pretty much everyone lists this type of chip collector. https://www.harborfreight.com/70-gal-2-hp-industrial-dust-collector-61790.html I understand that it will not result in clear air like a big cyclone system but I don't want to fill up the place with dust and chips. I just bought a small (10"...

Have you looked into the Australian "manly" method of carving violin backs. Should work even better on an arch top. :-)

Re: Cheap chinese cyclones: any good?

Thanks guys. I was thinking of making something like the dust deputy using one of the chinese components, a bucket and a vacuum of some kind.

@Bob. In the other thread you mentioned planning to make a new version of the tool stand in the picture. Did you ever get round to it?
