Re: The BlueBeatle
Thanks Dan! It's funny, in the past I never liked pickguards, but for some reason in the last couple years I've been having fun with them. I can't take credit for the design of this one though, I just modified an off the shelf one to look kind of like one I saw on a vintage tele somewhere. I liked h...

Re: The BlueBeatle
Thanks! I'm a fan of the translucent Reranch colors, they work well on the rare occasion I actually spray lacquer.

Re: Edge treatments: arm bevels and belly cuts?
I prefer anything that has at least a decent radius where the picking arm crosses the guitar. I recently played with making a 1/4" chamfer for the faux binding and feel that it made a big difference in comfort compared to a sharp edge that would be had with a traditional binding. I'm sure every...

Looks slick! The binding and details are awesome.
How do you like that Lace pickup? I've always been curious about those.

The BlueBeatle
It's been a little while since I was inspired to build something, and I've been distracted by amps too lately. I had a cool piece of heavier beetle kill pine hanging around and realized it was just big enough for a tele style build if I placed the cracks where the cutaways were. I also had a nice bo...

Jami, do you have finished pics of that thing? I dig the funky shape.

Re: New Build - Sorta Rick-inspired Mango Island Guitar
Yup. They sound like halfway between a P-90 and a strat pickup I'd say. Still getting used to them, but I think I definitely like the neck pickup. Jury is still out on if the bridge could be better. I think I would have wound the bridge a little hotter than it is to balance the neck better. I have t...

Re: New Build - Sorta Rick-inspired Mango Island Guitar
Thanks for the comments!
The bridge and neck are Novak pickups, and the middle is a cheapo I found on ebay that works perfect for what I wanted it to do. It's hotter so I can set it lower than the others, good for sloppy pickers like myself.

Re: New Build - Sorta Rick-inspired Mango Island Guitar
Sorry for the delay, but here's the finished guitar. I hate spraying lacquer finishes, but they sure do look cool when they are done. The pickup configuration turned out great. In between sounds are very cool and "stratty", and the addition of the bridge-middle series is actually very usef...

Looks awesome. Cool shape, and love the fanned frets and other details.

Re: Tone Wood for Electric Guitars
Jedi, I agree with Jason. There is absolutely no way for different materials with slightly different properties NOT to color the sound differently. I don't see how anyone who has played more than a few different electric guitars can not know this purely from experience. If it sounds different unplug...

Re: Tone Wood for Electric Guitars
I hate to be blunt but: Science is the reason we DO know things, and don't speculate on them. And we don't need an "algorithm" to know that every different material will react different to complex things like frequencies, damping, and all kinds of other complex parameters that govern vibra...

Re: Tone Wood for Electric Guitars
Contrary to what Fender advertises as the sound nuances of their different tone woods, i think they chose material based on availability, cost, and how easy it was to cover in plastic. I seriously doubt that Swamp Ash has some miracle sound qualities. But, I guess if a fellow were to make a custom ...

Re: Tone Wood for Electric Guitars
I felt justified enough in responding to this, that I posted a comment on Will's youtube video, something I rarely do. See my post there under my name. Besides the physics, I have built enough electric guitars to know that absolutely you hear differences between guitars built with different material...

Re: Tone Wood for Electric Guitars
Ha! I'm sorry but I'm still trying to make it through the video, and he is making less sense every second! At 38:40 he draws a wave with more of the complexity of a real wave, and then even draws one that's shaped like Mickey Mouse, and goes on to say "It doesn't matter what the shape is, they ...

Re: Tone Wood for Electric Guitars
Just another thing I noticed.. He says at about 34:40 "The type of material that the string is made out of changes the tone." Think of the whole guitar as a string suspended between the nut and the bridge. Why wouldn't the properties of this string change the tone? He also says earlier tha...

Re: Tone Wood for Electric Guitars
I'm still working my way through the first video you posted, and I'm going to watch the whole thing just to make sure I see all that he's saying. An interesting point I see is around minute 18 when he starts talking about timbre. The flaw I see is that he is making the assumption that the endpoints ...

Re: New Build - Sorta Rick-inspired Mango Island Guitar
Thanks folks!
I was happy that the color worked out like I hoped it would on the Mango, it was kind of hard to tell at first, even with tests on scrap.
Cheers.

Re: New Build - Sorta Rick-inspired Mango Island Guitar
Haha, thanks Jason!
Yeah, a subtle burst on this one, I think it will go well with the already amber/yellowish Mango.
I have a nice curly maple top set that I think I want to try the whole bleached maple/green or blue burst thing on, maybe on the next one. That should be a fun experiment.
