Re: I’m Stuck. Wash Coat Before Binding...
I apply a light coat of dewaxed blond shellac over the top for some protection against dirty fingerprints and grime getting into the wood. It's part of my finish process anyway as my go-to sealer. My bindings always need to be leveled after glue up and the sealer is reapplied after that process. I t...

Re: Outdoor glue for deck railings
Will polyurethane glue do the job for me? Is there a better option? You need a waterproof glue and the PU fits the bill. I used Gorilla Glue to repair a handrail on a driftboat 2 or 3 summers ago. There's a scarf joint in there somewhere. It sits out in the rain all winter and gets used several tim...

Re: Epoxy as a pore filler
One thing I'll point out about epoxy filler which hasn't been mentioned in the thread is that it has a propensity to swell up out of pores during final buffing on high speed buffers (600 RPM +) and then shrink back down into the pores and pulling the finish down with it... Thanks for that informati...

Re: Epoxy as a pore filler
Several times I've experimented by mixing the slow set epoxy sold by LMI and 2# cut dewaxed blond shellac 50/50 by volume. Spread it out on a strip of 1/16" fir. It dried hard enough to sand. I thought of using this as a filler coat but haven't tried it yet. Just used Z-poxy for the first time ...

Re: Doing fret board and head stock binding -questions
...suggestions on how to do things differently/better/easier would be appreciated, since I'm going to do another one soon... Hey Pete, Here are some pictures of what I use. It is not as rigid as I would like and will probably put some re-inforcment in one of these days. I do my boards pretty much a...

Re: Laminating top question
If I glue that onto a perfect flat surface like the planed body is going to be, is glue strength enough to keep it flat? What glue would I use for the best result? I have epoxy and Titebond II on hand, but I can get anything. I think the holding strength of either of those would be strong enough to...

Re: Advice Needed - When should I install frets onto my neck?
Barry, I tried that but with 1/4" blocks. As I said it helped some but 1/2" blocks would have helped more. I'll be braver next time. I bent the extension quite a bit after it was on the neck and clamped that overnight. It just didn't want to give in. I thought of putting a little moisture ...

Re: Advice Needed - When should I install frets onto my neck?
frettboard backbow.jpg Here is a fretboard from a guitar in progress. I check the width and depth of the fret slots with a tangless piece of the fret being used. I clamped this board overnight to try to force the frets to seat, and it helped some little bit. Splits in the soundboard on the sides of...

Re: What do you check before sending out a guitar?
You might reconsider what you say about laminates. People are doing some interesting stuff with laminates. Nomex honeycomb material, graphite, balsa laminates, etc. And I don't understand what you are saying in the last sentence here: "There are two types of top: solid wood and laminate. The la...

Re: bridge placement
Could you send a picture? Here are pictures of the one I most recently threw together for a 7 stringer I'm working on. I mocked it up on a 6 string in the finishing process and didn't put the tuners in or the nut in place. And the strings need to be long enough to make this work. Anyway, this will ...

Re: bridge placement
Is there some kind of jig I can build? Or is there some way to get the compensation right in real time on the uke before gluing bridge down? I am using D’Addario Nyltech strings THANKS! Re: Advice Needed - When should I install frets onto my neck?
I've been installing frets before gluing the fretboard on, and apply before shaping the neck. For classical guitars where I use a non-adjustable graphite truss rod I glue up with about 1/100" relief at the 5th fret, leveling and polishing afterword from the 1st to 5th then from the 5th fret to ...

I replaced the tires on my 14" Rockwell/Delta Several years ago with some urethane ones from Grizzly. As I recall, instructions were to heat the tires in 160°F water prior to installation.

I've heard of using colored pencils to fill little gaps in marquetry and mitered corners on purflings, though never tried it.

Re: Glue for colored veneer marquetry in spruce top
"... So i need some reasonably tan colored fill." I've mixed bone dust with epoxy for use as a filler. Another problem I have with this is the gaps aren't clean, but often have glue remnants visible at the surface. A collection of dental tools helps get those out but can't say I'm ever sa...

Re: Cherry 00
Nice looking guitar. I like the smaller size guitars. Cherry takes on a nice coloration with age, and I love the way it works. I've used on furniture but not for a guitar. I'm big on using local wood and we took down an old cherry tree two years ago. Still have two 3' diameter logs I started cutting...

Re: water based finish over linseed oil
Does anyone know if oil under EM6000 is a bad idea? It's a bad idea. It warns you on the back of the can "surfaces should be free of oil, dust and other contaminants..." I've been using it over shellac for years and never had problems with it. I've used Zinsner's, Target Coatings propriet...

Re: Vintage archtop guitar, neck backbow - the right way to go fixing it?
That guitar looks in such good shape that I wonder if it wasn't played much because of that back bow being there from early on. First thing to figure out is if the glue used on the neck is water soluble. Made in the 1930's there is a good chance that it's hide glue, but casein glue was popular and i...
