Re: A faster, non-spray booth, finish for a classical guitar project.
Have a look at Crystalac Bright Tone. I think it has a UV blocker which will help, as the Paduak will darken considerably. A quick look online seems to show availability in Europe. Robbie O'Brian applies it with a foam brush in this video: https://youtu.be/m1EFuyD3qq8 He also does one on Glue Boost ...

Re: Loss of bass lowering the saddle?
Thanks Marshall. I think I understand what you mean. I will give it a think before I jump on it with my saw, but it sounds doable. :) Take a look at “guitar bridge images” online. Definitely think on it. Play it for half a year. I've experimented with half dozen or so bridges this way. I have purpo...

Re: Loss of bass lowering the saddle?
Not sure if I understand correctly, but are you suggesting I could remove material from the front and back of the bridge? About the wings, they are 0,115'' thick at the end... not sure if this could be lowered? Also, not so sure of what you mean by "make the cuts with a razor saw". I woul...

Re: Loss of bass lowering the saddle?
Thanks for your replies. I will upload a picture later, but I think the break angle looks ok. There is between 3/32'' and 7/64'' saddle protruding above the bridge. The action at the 12th fret is now about 0,095'' at the low E, and about 0,085'' at the high e. Those numbers look good. But there is ...

Re: Loss of bass lowering the saddle?
Hi all, The saddle is now between 3/32'' and 7/64'', and the strings are about 0,430'' from the top in front of the bridge. I know this is not ideal, but I would think it's within reasonable measures. I do guitar repairs and I have done neck resets in the past, so money is not a problem, I just don...

Thanks for the info. I like using local woods and just made the acquaintance of an arborist who'll put aside the nicer stuff I'm looking for.

...It's from alder so not a match, but it's what I had scraps of... Nice work! Have you used alder for necks in the past? The reason I ask is that I harvested some from a neighbor last year with that in mind. I've used it in furniture making and like it's properties. Seems like it would work well f...

Re: Ex-wife ran over guitar
It has a double action truss rod which ends 1/4" from the fret board end, and extends about 1/2" deep under the fret board, so this limits the angle that I can cut the scarf without the truss rod getting in the way of a clean cut. I'll probably cut leaving some of the damaged wood. I can ...

Re: Ex-wife ran over guitar
I just found out that this guitar goes for $199 at Walmart. I'm in the process of making a classical headstock now. It's a lot of work. I don't keep track of my time, and am a sporadic worker. With the truss rod in there it doesn't look like a clean job. If I had to bill my time for this job I'd gue...

Re: Ex-wife ran over guitar
A couple of inlaid reinforcement strips on either side of the truss rod I've seen done. Even where the fracture is clean and the headstock attached. Probably good insurance.

I'd cut a scarf joint in the opposite direction to what we see in the pics, avoiding the truss rod.Peter Wilcox wrote: ↑Sun Feb 09, 2020 2:55 pm

One idea I've had is clipboards. But I'm not too confident with that idea.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!

I get here by going to the forum index page https://www.mimf.com/phpbb Thanks Pete. That works but until about a week ago I could log in automatically from an initial yellow page of selections that included mime forum, FAQ's, bookstore, etc. Now even the sign on is different as it doesn’t ask me if...

I am so impressed with your work.
Took a listen to several composers you suggested in an earlier thread. Yet another world of wonderful music.
Thanks again for those suggestions.

Re: Fixing separated neck laminations, any tricks out there?
How about drying it out to as low as can be, then planing some super thin shavings of ebony, ironing them flat and working them into the crack with some glue. Or maybe find some black veneer and shaving/scraping to fit.

Re: 7 course renaissance lute
Thanks for the recommendations. I have several transcriptions in various anthologies. About 30 years ago I picked up Frederick Noad's ”The Renaissance Guitar” and tried some of those pieces. I couldn't get them to sound right. Now with the internet it's much easier to get another perspective.

When it comes to glue im wondering between pur glue and titebond. Hello and welcome. Pardon the delay in response. I had to look up pur glue. It seems this is a hot melt glue and non reversible. I've had time where I got everything glued up and clamped down then realized I was off a hair and had to...

Re: 7 course renaissance lute
The contrasting colors work well. I'm not sure which colors to believe of the two backs, but I'm colorblind anyway. I haven't heard much Renaissance music outside of Monteverdi, which didn't capture my heart. But I know that Resphigi's Ancient Airs and Dances were transcriptions of, or influenced by...

Also to consider about the fretboard: there’s a good chance that it is “ebonized” lighter colored wood.
