Re: Adequate air-drying time for instrument woods?

Thanks for all the input. I'll most likely resaw some of it and then re-sticker for a few months before I try using it.

Re: Alternate acoustic tops

I think I'm gonna give the cherry a try in the near future. Guess I'll find out the hard way how it works out.

Adequate air-drying time for instrument woods?

This has never been an issue for me because all my woods are always kiln-dried but I now have a reason for asking. I'm located in GA and last year, the F4 tornado that ripped up most of the southeast came straight through the heart of where I live, and in the process, went straight through the heart...

Re: Alternate acoustic tops

Thanks. Now that I have such a good supply of cherry and black walnut, I was thinking of trying each as a top wood.

Re: $100 Local Materials Challenge, Eddie McRae, Grand Auditorium Cutaway Acoustic

Thanks Mark. These 2 acoustics, along with a custom cherry LP that I've just finished up with, will all be getting nitro burst finishes. I'm looking forward to getting them setup to hear how they sound. I'll post pictures of them when they're done.

Re: Alternate acoustic tops

By my way of thinking.....I would expect that using hardwoods like that for a top would probably produce a very trebley tone acoustically. And Alan, I agree with your point regarding acoustic/electric.

Re: $100 Local Materials Challenge, Eddie McRae, Grand Auditorium Cutaway Acoustic

Construction work is complete on both. So now it's time for some finish work. I'll most likely start spraying seal coats on them over the weekend but I certainly won't be making the challenge deadline.

As requested....a couple of close-up pics of the fretboard extension and it's fit.

Re: $100 Local Materials Challenge, Eddie McRae, Grand Auditorium Cutaway Acoustic

I've never used any glue with this system. I've built 11 acoustics and resonators using this setup and haven't had the slightest problem with any of them. However, as I said above, I generally place the mount directly under the 19th dot inlay but in this case because of the location of the upper bou...

Re: $100 Local Materials Challenge, Eddie McRae, Grand Auditorium Cutaway Acoustic

The fretboard extension mount has an 8-32 threaded insert in it. A cap screw is threaded from the inside of the body through the fretboard support and into the mount. It pulls the fretboard down tight and flush to the top. The complete system consists of the 2 heel bolts (1/4-20 cap screws) and the ...

Re: $100 Local Materials Challenge, Eddie McRae, Grand Auditorium Cutaway Acoustic

Both are complete now as far as construction goes. All that's left is finish work and then setup. This is a pic of one of them bolted back together.

Alternate acoustic tops

I just read recently where Taylor has released a new custom GS walnut model. Complete walnut construction....top, back, and sides. I've also been noticing the trend of other manufacturers to use other woods for acoustic tops such spalted ash, spalted maple, etc. These just seem like they would be ex...

Re: Eddie McRae - BluesHound biscuit-bridge resonator

I've never used bulbs for bending so I can't answer your question there. I can say this though....with the cost of heat lamp and infrared bulbs here in the U.S., it'd be cheaper to buy a blanket. I got mine from Omega for less than $70. As far as bending ply....the only ply that I've bent was mahoga...

Re: $100 Local Materials Challenge, Eddie McRae, Grand Auditorium Cutaway Acoustic

Thanks. I've grown to like the pickguards the more I've looked at them. I did manage to get the necks carved over the weekend and got started with the purfling and binding work today. Hoping to be done with the construction work on these by Wednesday and from there, it'll just be finish work. Needle...

Re: $100 Local Materials Challenge, Eddie McRae, Grand Auditorium Cutaway Acoustic

I got the necks fitted on both. I'd already made both bridges earlier but I decided to go ahead and make a couple of black walnut pickguards and then mocked everything up just to get an idea of the outcome. Still not sure about the pickguards....can't decide if I like them or not.

Re: $100 Local Materials Challenge, Eddie McRae, Grand Auditorium Cutaway Acoustic

Thanks Mark. The bracewood came from some spruce that's been in the shop for at least 10 years so it's well dried, no doubt. I tend to think the scalloping was probably the reason. At any rate, I resolved the issue but it took a little time to do so. I normally don't like to cut the neck angle until...

Re: $100 Local Materials Challenge, Eddie McRae, Grand Auditorium Cutaway Acoustic

Thanks Mark. I've had an issue arise with these that's never happened to me before. Perhaps you may have a little insight because I can't figure it for the life of me. I drafted a drawing to determine the neck angle for these a week or so ago so I could go ahead and cut the heels and get the fretboa...
