fretting - rounding errors
Hi. This could probably go anywhere. I've been fiddling with a cad programme and done myself a fret distance calculator iin Excel. I draw my centreline & step from nut towards the bridge the appropriate distance according to thr ftret number. So now errors start o creep in.I type 21.4428 when i ...

Re: Big ugly Scar..
hi. I went weak at the knees on reading Barry's advice, but i really had no choice ..so ..i cut with an assortment of hobby knives chisels...whatever.. the patch was small and flimsy and broke a number of times... I have never done anything like this, and never want to again...but.. here are the 'af...

) ..yes.. that's what the plan always was, but I'm wondering how unevenly the dye will take. YOu can see a little red dye where I experimented a bit.

Big ugly Scar..
Hi. I'm hoping someone can advise on a good patch on what will be a dye stained finish. This attempted patch is shellac and sawdust which I have done before, but this time things don't seem to be going well see pic: I think the fault was caused by a slip while sanding the carve before the binding wa...

People like me need superglue!
Though this episode qualifies me as dunce of the week, it's a true story and might help someone in similar circumstances. Hard to see anyone needing more help than me..but..one don't never know... For the first time I'm trying an ebony fretboard. after all sorts of frustration hammering in the first...

Clean up for weld-on
Hi.
I have bound a neck somewhat sloppily and now i have to clean up a lot of weld-on on the fingerboard (ebony).
What's a good safe clean up for weld-on in these circumstances?
Thanks,
Rob.

Re: squaring table saw fret slotter
I appreciate all the tips. By my calculations I have an error of 0.0019" per inch of cut out of square. Over a fretboard width that would be < 0.0038" (0.0965mm). Can anyone tell me if that's in the ball park and if not what is? Also if the fret slots are going to be parallel wouldn't one ...

Re: squaring table saw fret slotter
I didn't make myself clear...too many thoughts at once. so the slot in the sled will have to be cut with a wide blade to allow the slotting blade with stiffeners to rise through to the extent that a fret slot will be cut. so it's not a zero clearance set up. I guess i'm worried about chip out...with...

Re: squaring table saw fret slotter
Thanks for all the info. Am I right in assuming that I'll need to cur the slot in the sled using a 'normal' blade since the available depth on the slotting blade is insufficient to pass through the sled bottom - about 6mm say - and then cut a slot? If I square up the fence using a normal blade what ...

squaring table saw fret slotter
Hi. I have read the 2012 thread on table saw fret slot cutting jigs & viewed a few schemes on You Tube. Variety is the spice of life right? However I need to ask a question ... Some guys use the mitre gauge almost as is, & some build sleds. Prresumably there is some advantage in the workpiec...

solder wick
I am hoping this is an appropriate forum. How do I use a solder wick to clean up messy drops of solder? I assumed it would be like a reverse solder - ie heat up the wick & the affected area & the solder would magically run up the wick. It hasn't happened. What is the correct way to use a wic...

how to repair shallow ding
Hi. I have had a lacquered ( Shellac cross linked ) body hanging for 3 months. When i took it down to start rubbing out I discovered a shallow ding about 10mm ( just under 1/2") across. the top is highly figured wood stained with water soluble dye, and I very much want to avoid attacking the ar...

Re: My first build the slow progression
HI. The top looks great!! Re carving - there will be 50+ different approaches that all work. In my first attempts (+subsequent) I used Anthony Setchell's jig for most of it. I think he has a tutorial here somewhere - but here's a link to his page (scroll) his whole site is worth browsing. http://hom...

Re: Red tele with maple neck
Looks great! Can you tell more about the cross linked shellac? I've heard a little about this before, but not much. How does it work, and did you have a good experience with it? Hi. It has all the attributes of shellac...ie the affinty for wood, modes of application, no toxicicty etc but the fragil...

Red tele with maple neck
Hi. Not quite done, but almost there. Body is danta, stained with feast watson proof tint red, cross linked shellac finish, maple neck, zero fret , angled headstock, birdseye fingerboard, sperzel tuners - other stuff Gotoh. I can't get the exact 'redness' on my phone. A slightly redder imitation of J...
