Re: ES 137 style centerblock construction details
http://www.es-335.net/index.html There are informative (and drool worthy) pictures at this site. The first 335s were very solid and were wired through the F holes. I think this is one of the reasons they sound so good. Dan Erlewine remarks how the people doing the wiring touched up the finish when t...

Re: Arch Top Mando Cello conversion
Unless you've already drilled the holes, I would suggest using guitar machines rather than mandolin machines. You might even need to drill out a guitar machine to accept that low "C".

Re: Squier VM Jaguar bridge swap
Brian and I are both guilty of assuming we know what kind of bridge is on the guitar. it is not the typical Jazzmaster/jaguar/mustang bridge we all know and avoid. From what I can see, the bridge in place is pretty simple and stable. The tuning problems are probably due to the short scale length. Th...

OK so now I n=know it doesn't have a tremolo. oops.
Try the heavier strings, be sure they are installed properly (safety posts) and pull them to brea them in.

Re: squier VM jaguar bridge swap
What kind of spring mechanism doe this use? It probably would be easier to block it from moving that to replace it. It would certainly be cheaper. That being said, if this has the typical Jaguar 24" scale, it will not be as stable as, say, a Stratocaster with a block tremolo. Going up a gauge i...

Re: Any experience with the Guild George Barnes Acousti-lectric
Hans Moust is the Guild Maven. He might know what is going on inside the George Barnes. You should pick up Hans' "The Guild Guitar Book". Lotsa nice pictures of Guilds you've never seen. There is a guitar built for George Benson with a D shaped sound hole. Its original pick up was "ba...

Re: Pot education please
I misunderstood the topic being discussed. I thought we were going to be wistful about the 60s and 70s... As Brian says the conventional wisdom is 250k pots for single coil and 500k for humbucking (as well as audio for volume and linear for tone). Fine with me. The reason for the different values (n...

Re: Jazz bass pickup spacing
I have an 1980 article by Seymour Duncan which gives the distance from the nut to the pole pieces (jazz bass) as 27 7/8" and 31 9/16". This looks like the original spacing. My own opinion, worth everything you've paid for it, is that I prefer the old basses for just about any and all reaso...

Re: Can someone walk me through speaker design? I have no idea.
That kit looks like a lot of fun. Needless to say you are overqualified in regard to the necessary "woodworking". I got a pair of tweeters from them and they really revived our old beloved Baby Advents. I'll bet that kit will sound really good, and then the "I wonder if I....." w...

Re: whammy bridge under 3/8" for carved top?
I was just on the bigsby site and it looks like the B5 might work. The total height of the front roller section is 11/16". It looks like the bottom of the roller is 1/2 way down making it just under 3/8".

Re: partially fretless bass, likely reinventing the wheel.
I put the side dots on the two fretless basses I have made exactly at the intonation points (and only at the normal positions for fret markings in a guitar). Not to put words in Bob's mouth, but I am pretty sure he means that the dots are where the frets would be and only at the third, fifth, seven...

Re: partially fretless bass, likely reinventing the wheel.
Jedi, A 2 piece bridge will only adjust the intonation on one string or the other. Even if you never play above the 12th fret, you need 4 bridge pieces. Everyone is welcome to disagree. Beate, It is just as easy to play out of tune in the lower registers. I know all too well... I agree one should ha...

Re: Tuners for 12 string
The slotted posts have holes down the center of the post. You cut the string a bit beyond the machine, stick the end in the hole and wrap. It's fast, clean and works well. And the newer machines of this type are much improved over the "vintage" ones. Google "Kluson slotted machine hea...

Re: Tuners for 12 string
All have made good points, but I'm jumping in anyway. My first "good" guitar was a 12-string and it was a chore to restring it. Not as bad as a Rickenbacker or d35-12, but still a chore. If I were to build a 12 string, I'd consider a machine with safety posts, like Fender used. This used t...

Re: A request for advice on removing a neck.
I went back to look at your original posts. You did a tremendous amount of work in the first place, so I would think you'd want the fixes as invisible as possible. Your neck joint (though it doesn't show) looks like it would be very much like a les paul, opening up into the pick up cavity. look at t...

Re: Trying to indentify a iron guitar form I recently purchased
The hump at the neck end of the side bender makes me think of Bohmann. I just googled him and while I associate him with those lumpy guitars he made some more conventional instruments as well.

Re: I can't find parts for this guitar...
When you say "electronics" do you mean the Pre amp or the pickups and preamp. I just did a google search and the pick ups are available (from Jet.com of all places) but it looks like they don't have the 3 band EQ (I'm assuming the pre amp is volume, blend plus 3 bands). It looks like that ...

Re: Yamaha warranty
David is right. Having just read the Yamaha warranty, go to Yamaha directly. It might be as simple as getting someone new on the phone and presenting yourself as a competent owner. I might also go up the food chain at Guitar Center, and that is going above the store manager's head. There are probabl...
