Re: Help request with my drum sander

I have a doubt that maybe my question was not very clear. When I say that the wood is thinner at the ends than the center, I do not mean laterally. I mean that at the beginning and at the end of the piece it is thinner than in the middle.

Re: Help request with my drum sander

Hi Peter, it is about 0,2 mm thinner at both edges. So from your reply I can understand that is is unusual. I thought it could have been a pretty common problem. It’s always been this way. The sander is new. But before this I had another one cheaper that made a decent job, but had exactly the same p...

Help request with my drum sander

Hello, I am having an issue with my Jet 16-32 drum sander. Whatever wood I try to thickness the outer ends always come out thinner than the portion in the middle. Do you know why this happens and how can I avoid it?
Thanks Enrico

Re: Thinking about a steel string ...

About finish I recently had decent results with tru oil. Just on the neck though. I read it was nice for the neck and I can confirm that. I don't know about durability though. Also, I do not dare to do the whole body with tru oil. I read that it can be done, but I am not sure about the results. It d...

Re: Cutting purfling after gluing

Ok, last chapter. I used this jig for thicknessing. I just run it through the thickness sander. It is very fast, easy and precise. I am happy with the results. So at the end I don’t know if my procedure of bending and gluing first and Then cutting is better than the other versions. I am pretty sure ...

Re: Cutting purfling after gluing

You did a clean job here. The end result is very pleasing I would say. Also, the spruce is wonderful!

Re: Cutting purfling after gluing

Yes, I think that is important. In fact today I cut two more slices using a fence and it cut very well. Thickness was very homogeneous. I am pretty satisfied with the results. I still want to try another idea tomorrow and see if it works. It is a device that theoretically should help me thickness it...

Re: Cutting purfling after gluing

FD39F5BD-5A40-4C17-9F86-A48EEDEA922B.jpeg Thanks to all for the nice suggestions. I want to give you an update. I did it on the bandsaw. I glued a sacrificial mold just at the waist area. It only took 5 minutes to build and it turned out perfect. Yes, it can be done on the bandsaw quite easily. I d...

Re: Cutting purfling after gluing

I think you are right. I think this is what I will do from now on. It all depends on how the cut will go. I fear for the worst though.

Thanks Clay. I am a bit scared to do this operation on the table saw. But your suggestion is very appreciated. Thanks

Re: Aqua Coat grain filler

Yes I agree. Despite being so tough to sand, in terms of end results epoxy is number one. In my opinion of course

Re: Cutting purfling after gluing

Yes I think you are right. I can't see a way of cutting it, if not by using the drill press and the small circular saw I was talking about before. Maybe I might try to make a rudimentary outside form with some scrap wood just at the waist area to support it. But I don't know if it's worth it. That's...

Cutting purfling after gluing

I decided to try a different procedure for making the purflings. I cut each strip extra large, about 1”. I glue them directly bent in the mold. The result is nice. I get this nicely bent purfling. The good thing about this is that I can make complex purfling. Much more than a couple of black white b...

Re: Aqua Coat grain filler

About aqua coat, I tried some time ago. I got bad results, so I decided not to use it anymore. But the I read positive reviews and therefore I thought it was my fault. So I decided to give it a try again. Bad results. I hated it. So I swore not to use it any more. But then I read enthusiastic review...

Drawing software for tablet

Hello, I found a place around here that can cut plexiglass with laser. I was thinking that I might use it to make things like head plates and so on. I would like to make my own drawings in a vectorial form rather than relying on them for drawing. The problem is that I don’t have a pc anymore. I used...

Re: Guing over epoxy coated surface

Marshall, I just love epoxy. Except for its toxicity, I would build and paint the whole guitar with it :-) Few things. First of all you have to be extremely precise when mixing the two components. I always use a decimal scale and weigh them. If you are precise it hardens like glass. One time I made ...
