Re: New here...old guy in guitars.

Thanks for the welcome, gentlemen! Jason, I'm on the Salmon River, 12 miles up river from Challis. When I first got here I sealed the shop up and had a humidifier going, kept it at 35% RH, but gave that up after a year and now build at the "normal" 25% inside the shop. I have a lot to say ...

New here...old guy in guitars.

Hi, I'm Stephen and just joined up. I apprenticed with Yuris Zeltins at The Blue Guitar in San Diego starting in 1969 and worked with him for 34 years. My wife and I moved up to Idaho in 2005 where I'm building steel strings and venturing into classical. I still do repair and am the "Authorized...

Re: My first build - where to start

Just want to jump in here with a couple of things. Flamenco guitars are made with Spanish Cypress, difficult to get, however, there is Monterey Cypress on the West coast and with some digging you could probably find some. The cypress is part of the brassy sound known in flamenco guitars. Unless you ...

Re: History question: sawing off the FB extsension

It's possible that there were independent "discoveries" at about the same time. Yuris Zeltins at The Blue Guitar figured it out about 1962-63. I think Jon Lundberg in Berkley did it at about the same time. Both men kept it to themselves.

Re: Gurian Pick Guard Material Needed Please!

Do a search for plastics supplier in your area. What you want is black "ridged vinyl". Typical thickness for pick guards is .020" but you might want .015.
Any thinner than that may be too thin. Make sure the surface is free of old glue. Hope that helps.

Re: Building for a dry climate

I've lived in Central Idaho for 10 years. Humidity in the shop averages 25% and I build at that. My wood sets are kept in the shop for a few months before I use them so they're acclimated when I build. My customers travel and have reported the guitars remained stable everywhere. I arch the top brace...

Re: Malaysian Blackwood

I've built one guitar with Malaysian Blackwood. I will use it again. Very similar to rosewoods in sound. I bent sides using the Fox bender and had no problems. It glues well, routing for purfling was easy and clean, no chip outs.
